About the Author
Nathan Long was a struggling screenwriter for fifteen years, during which time he had three movies made and a handful of live-action and animated TV episodes produced. Now he is a novelist, and enjoys it much more. For Black Library he has written three Warhammer novels featuring the Blackhearts, and has taken over the Gotrek and Felix series, starting with the eighth installment, Orcslayer. He lives in Hollywood.

I love Gotrek & Felix I read all the previous books with there characters in them. I didn't think I would like Nathan Long but he writes very well. I can't wait until another installment comes out!! FORGET FIVES STARS THIS BOOK IS TEN STARS!!!

I'm still not sure what to make of Nathan Long as the new author of Gotrek & Felix. On the one hand, William King was clearly getting bored with Gotrek & Felix. And there are things Long has done with the characters that I legitimately enjoy. But the hilarious gallows humor that sucked me into Gotrek & Felix has slowly become almost completely absent over the course of the series. Felix is on his 3rd or 4th teenage maturity romance over 20+ years of travelling? And I won't lie, slaying zombies after slaying a Bloodthirster in Demon Slayer is just anticlimactic. They are running out of new and interesting things to slay. The ending of this particular novel is just anticlimactic as well, even without being taken into the greater context of the series.
Still, its more Gotrek & Felix. And Snorri and Max and Kat and a few other really great characters. I grew to really enjoy the disposable extras in this novel especially. Even if they had only 30 or 40 pages of presence before becoming zombified, they had some great lines and interactions while they were around. And there are a lot of great scenes that really show the friendship between Gotrek & Felix. And Felix is given plenty of room to shine as well, which is great to see. For a while he'd become purely a narrator, contributing almost nothing to advance the story.
So yeah. If you are a fan, it certainly can't hurt to read this one. If you've stuck around this long and enjoyed it, this is more of the same.

Met expectations

Let's be honest, no one is going to pick up this book and expect a life-changing reading experience. But of the books I have read the past few months, this one is in the top two that I enjoyed the most. For a story that one would expect to be filled with blood, gore and maiming (which it was, fear not) it also had a good plot, whodunnit-style intrigue and in typical slayer fashion let you wonder until the very end if this might finally be the end of Gotrek. At one point I was even looking at the remaining pages of the book and saying to myself, "there's no way he can wrap this up." And while the end was sort of deus-ex-machina, it did not detract from the overall sense of danger, struggle and urgency. In fact, the weakest point of the story is simply that it requires having read the previous book in the series, which is a cliffhanger leading into this one.
