Physical Layout and Content Coverage

There are seven units covered in Integrated iScience. The units are the Nature of Science (NOS p.4), Motion and Energy (p.6), Interactions of Matter (p.158), Understanding the Universe (p.368), Earth and Geologic Changes (p.454), Exploring Ecology (p.640), and Heredity and Human Body Systems (p.758). The placement of these units suggest a clear progression from broad scientific concepts or laws that govern the universe to more familiar topics like the Earth, the environment and humans and how they are affected by scientific laws. The authors have avoided putting the cart before the horse by first attempting to explain the intangible then framing context with the tangible.

Each unit contains several chapters that discuss these subjects in greater detail through the minimal use of body text and copious illustrations, pictures (trace fossils on p.568), charts, graphs, maps (Earthquake Hazard map on p.540), models, ‘Foldables’ (two quarter-sheet of paper used as note cards on p.284) , labs, study guides, and links to additional Online information. Students should enjoy these illustrations because they are attention-getting with bold colors and depict real world situations and environments. Teachers should find these charts and models useful because each asks students questions which require the student engage in inquiry and reflect on the ‘Big Idea’ presented. There are special framing devices called ‘Big Idea’ at the beginning of each chapter (i.e., “What are solutions and how are they described?” p.332). This is the first textbook I’ve studied to use this feature in this way.

As engagement in inquiry is the unifying element of the text, students are asked engaging questions throughout typically at the beginning of each chapter. These questions should be helpful for conducting class discussions, scaffolding of new content, introducing vastly broad or hyper-specific concepts (“How do noble gases help preserve our nation’s founding documents?”), and engaging students in topic analysis, synthesis, or evaluation (“A student is dissolving rock salt in water. Describe three ways to increase the rate of dissolving”). These questions are relatable to students by referring documents they have heard about (and possibly seen on visits to Washington D.C.) before and by referring to lab procedures they have either done in previous grades or have already executed in previous sections of the textbook.

There are multiple formats of self-assessment at the end of each section that students can use take stock of their learning. Sectional reviews include a visual summary, which is a collection of some of the visuals used in current section with appropriate explanations, a ‘What Do You Think Now’ section which asks students if their body of knowledge on the subject was reinforced or positively enhanced after having read the selection, vocabulary review, an understanding key concepts review, a section on interpreting graphs from the reading, and an area of questions that encourage the students to think critically.

At the conclusion of each chapter there are other forms of self-assessment that can be utilized by students and teachers. First, there is a chapter study guide that includes the following: review of the Big Idea which can be found at the beginning of each chapter, a key concepts review which quickly surveys the main topics of each section of the chapter, and a section that links vocabulary words to key concepts through interactive concept mapping (p.293). Secondly, each chapter review contains a set of multiple-choice practice questions. Within this section there are also higher order questions that invoke critical thinking through the use of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Finally, there is a section that is completely devoted to standardized test practice. These questions are also multiple-choice, graph or chart interpretation, and constructed response. What is most helpful about the standardized testing section is that each question includes where in the chapter that concept was taught. If students have trouble with a specific question they can quickly flip to that section for additional learning or context clarification.

Alignment of Coverage with State Content Standards

Here is a list of all of the standards that are being covered in the state of Ohio for 8th grade science where each standard can be found in the textbook. The standards are in italics.

1. The composition and properties of Earth’s interior are identified by the behavior of seismic waves. This standard is discussed in Chapter 15: Earthquakes and Volcanoes which is found in Unit 4: Earth and Geologic Changes.
2. Earth’s crust consists of major and minor tectonic plates that move relative to each other. This standard is discussed in Chapter 15: Earthquakes and Volcanoes which is found in Unit 4: Earth and Geologic Changes.
3. A combination of constructive and destructive geologic processes formed Earth’s surface. This standard is discussed in Chapter 15: Earthquakes and Volcanoes and Chapter 16: Clues to Earth’s Past which are found in Unit 4: Earth and Geologic Changes.
4. Earth’s surface is formed from a variety of different geologic processes, including but not limited to plate tectonics. Evidence of the dynamic changes of Earth’s surface through time is found in the geologic record. This standard is discussed in Chapter 14: Plate Tectonics, Chapter 15: Earthquakes and Volcanoes, and Chapter 16: Clues to Earth’s Past which are all found in Unit 4: Earth and Geologic Changes.
5. Reproduction is necessary for the continuation of every species. This standard is discusses in Chapter 22: Heredity and How Traits Change which can be found in Unit 6: Heredity and Human Body Systems.
6. Diversity of species occurs through gradual processes over many generations. Fossil records provide evidence that changes have occurred in number and types of species. This standard is discussed in Chapter 16: Clues to Earth’s Past found in Unit 4: Earth and Geologic Changes and Chapter 22: Heredity and How Traits Change which is in Unit 6: Heredity and Human Body Systems.
7. The characteristics of an organism are a result of inherited traits received from parent(s). This standard is discussed in Chapter 22: Heredity and How Traits Change which is in Unit 6: Heredity and Human Body Systems.
8. Forces between objects act when the objects are in direct contact or when they are not touching. This standard is discussed in Chapter 2: The Laws of Motion which is found in Unit 1: Motion and Energy.
9. Forces have magnitude and direction. This standard is discussed in Chapter 1: Describing Motion and Chapter 2: The Laws of Motion which are both found in Unit 1: Motion and Energy.
10. There are different types of potential energy. This standard is discussed in Chapter 3: Energy, Work, and Simple Machines which is found in Unit 1: Motion and Energy.

Of the books my mentor teacher considered to use for a pilot program at school, Integrated iScience is the clear choice for teaching the whole of 8th grade science. No book more closely matches the 2014 common core standards for 8th grade science in the state of Ohio than Integrated iScience. One of the biggest changes to the common core standards is the complete removal of all Astronomy related topics and the additional emphasis on Physics standards including Forces and Energy. As explained in the section of this report regarding physical layout and content coverage, Integrated iScience nearly perfectly reflects these changes in standards.
