You Know They're Here, by Paul J. Kenyon

"You Know They're Here" is a true story of actual events of a haunted house experienced by this author in the mid-seventies. A family with four children was eventually driven from their home after an unsuccessful exorcism was performed to cleanse their house of unwanted spirits. Kenyon befriended the Dandy family and initially became an evening 'guard' helping to keep the curious from trespassing on their property. The events he experienced for more than a year heightened his sense of the paranormal to frightening levels. For a time, Paul, being the aggressor toward the energies of the house, held the interest of one of the more malevolent entities. "You Know They're Here" will have you sleeping with the lights on and have you second guessing your beliefs of the spirit world.

From the Author
Hello readers, Paul J Kenyon here. Initially You Know They're Here was only meant to be a personal achievement; I had no intentions of publishing the story. Clara Miller who lived in the infamous haunted house with her family suggested I send a copy to her publisher consideration. I waited a bit as I had personally edited the book and wasn't aware of the ins and outs of publishing.

Originally the book was over 1000 pages and I whittled it down to just over 500 after Virtual Book Worm accepted the book for publishing. The idea of finishing the story some 34 years after I'd started writing it was a "fun" thought for me. I included an abundance of information about my personal life as well as the local area where I'd grown up. Of course, many critics view that information as a distraction from the main theme of the story, "The haunted house in the hills of Hinsdale, New York. Most from the area enjoyed the references to local business and people, whereas many just felt it was too much information.

What transpired at the house during that year and a half I visited the Dandy family is all there, you just get a lot more information you might not care about if you're not from the Western New York area. I hope you'll accept the idea that this book was for me, but I'm sure you'll find enough about the problems of the paranormal that ultimately caused the Dandy family to flee their beloved country home.

Badly written
By Sandy Rhoad
Another person "cash'n in" on someone else's problems just to make a buck. This is the most poorly written book I have EVER read. NO ONE - and I mean not one person on earth - can remember every conversation they had at the age of 22 with their wife. A sample: I went to the fridge, got out the meat and cheese, made a sandwich. Walked across the floor and gave it to my wife. She picked it up and chewed and swallowed a bite. PLEASE --- boring to the extreme. Then he centers the paranormal things in the house around HIM even though his wife only worked with the woman who owned the house. Cashing in. Badly written, not totally true and to make it worse --- he's writing three more books. Not me - will not purchase nor read. This guy is NOT a writer. Don't waste the money. If you want to read about the happenings in the house get it from another source. HORRIBLE book.

Truly Interesting
By Larry M. Smith
One of the best haunt books i've read in a very long time. As a long time Olean, NY folk myself, i never knew what it was really about till i picked up this book (although i had heard bits here and there, just never the full force that this book has created). Mr. Kenyon very well details of events made this a classic in my heart, however, the down side is that not everything was put into the book after reading Clara's book, however, it doesnt hurt it at all, just wish some of the events from her book was in Mr. Kenyon's book. Anyways, this is a truly high reccomended book and will sure to bring back memories of Olean, NY old timers as well.

NOT scary, he can't decide if it should be a novel or non-fiction.
By Cali
Let me begin my review by saying that I have collected well over 200 books since the 1980's dealing with real-life hauntings. I grew up in an 'active' home and have seen many things I can't rationally explain and I am a firm believer in ghosts, spirits and apparitions.
That being said I felt compelled to offer my very first review on a paranormal book.
This book was one of the WORST I have had the misfortune of wasting my money on.
Let's start with the length and the inclusion of details and subplot story lines that have absolutely nothing to do with the supposed paranormal experiences of Mr Kenyon.
For instance, what was the purpose of going on and on about what he had for breakfast in the Fall of 1973 ? The eggs were scrambled, the toast was dry, the juice was bitter, it had too many seeds, etc....
This is just a small example of the seemingly endless wasted text on the author's daily life.
What was the purpose of the chapters-eating dialogue dealing with how he made all this money on the business's marble fixtures, etc, the feud he had with the man who sold him the business, what WAS that all about ? In the end did it contribute to the paranormal aspects of the story ? I kept waiting for it to be all tied in but in the end but that never happened.
It seems to me the reason it was included was so we, the readers, wouldn't think TOO badly of a seemingly healthy 21 year old with a fiancee' and baby on the way, doing nothing more than playing in a band once a week and working at a sub shop part time for a few weeks while his fiancee' got up to go to work every day.
He goes on and on about how great his relationship is with this saint of a woman, even giving us the full dialogue of inane conversations that were so corny I couldn't help but roll my eyes and cringe a bit.
He alludes to this wonderful relationship ending at some point, yet in the end of the book, when he is wrapping up, he fills us in on the rest of the characters in the story, but never updates us on his OWN story.

Let's get to the aspect of the scariness of this book. If you are looking for a good and scary narrative of a real-life haunting, don't bother with this book.
There was nothing remotely scary about it, a few so-called sightings of apparitions, a few whispered words, but nothing that makes you want to sleep with the lights on and jump at every sound in the house.
I got the impression that the writer wanted to cash in on the recent popularity of the ghost hunting genre and Mrs. Dandy's book. It seems he pretty much used his few tepid experiences and fleshed it out with totally inane and trivial dialogue trying to convince us that he played a major part in the story of this active home. Most of the book feels made-up and over dramatized.

Shame on you Mr. Kenyon.
