About the Author
Seshat Sat’Heru is a Wab(Purification) Priestess, founder of Ab-Seshat Language Services, creator of the WadjetAnkh Yoga System, a natural healer, and mother of two. She has written a series of books that center around ancient Kamitic language and culture, and add to the available media that tell OUR story as a people. Seshat, the Divine Principle for whom she is named, is the ancient Kamitic Ntorot of writing and mathematics. She gave this gift to African people so that we could become masters of our earthly reality. Our people were the first to have language, the first to have mathematics, and the first to describe and record the world around us by using these divine tools. Seshat has also written MasHeru, Birth of an Ancient King, the story of the birth of Heru on December 25th after the raising of the Djed for Ausar at the Winter Solstice on December 21st. Three more books are due for release this year: the first is a children’s language book of 100 commonly used words and images to go with them. This full color book also comes with a language cd so that the pronunciations are clear; parents will be able to use it with their children so that as a family they will be able to speak it at home and with other families who study language as well. The fourth book details the WadjetAnkh system of yoga, which was designed to release the inner serpent power, raise the inner divine energy, to make the practitioner a more effective master of his or her own destiny. This will be followed by a workout book, as well as a video series so that people will be able to follow along and use this powerful system at home even if they are not able to attend classes. It is Seshat’s goal to put her research not only into books outlining sacred language and its use as a tool of cultural revival, but also to develop a website and mobile app for the purpose of teaching sacred languages to individuals, families, home school collectives, and larger educational institutions devoted to the empowerment of people of African descent.

About the Author

Juan Carlos Santana, MEd, CSCS, is the founder and director of the Institute of Human Performance (IHP) in Boca Raton, Florida. IHP has been recognized as one of the top training facilities in the world and the best core-training facility in the United States.

Santana has been part of the strength and conditioning programs for several Florida Atlantic University sports teams over the last two decades. He is responsible for the strength and conditioning programs for men’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, track and field, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s swimming.

A member and certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Santana is also a member and certified health fitness instructor with the ACSM. In addition, he is a certified senior coach and club coach course instructor with the U.S. weightlifting team and a level I coach with USA Track and Field.

Santana currently is on the NSCA Board of Directors and is a sport-specific conditioning editor for the NSCA Journal. His professional responsibilities have included serving as NSCA vice president, chairman of the NSCA Coaches Conference, a member of the NSCA Conference Committee, and the NSCA Florida state director. As a college professor, he has taught sports training systems and strength training at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). An FAU graduate with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in exercise science, Santana is involved in several ongoing research studies with numerous universities and is working on his PhD in exercise physiology.

This book should be put in every personal trainer's hands on their first day. It is packed with unreal amounts of information and guidance. I personally train clients using his philosophies and methodologies every single day, and the results are incredible. This book has everything in it to get your clients or even yourself to the next level. This is not aimed at specific groups or sports, it's for any and all walks of life! You won't be disappointed in your purchase. Carlos, thank you for providing, what is now, the most valuable piece of literature I own.

All you need to get started

As I understand it, the term "Functional Training" is an exercise philosophy that simplifies the more traditional model. The large-scale gym with its endless supply of expensive, fancy machines is replaced by a smaller space that houses only a handful of multi-use items such as dumbbells and medicine balls. Or the gym is portable, like in a duffle bag, and can be set up almost anywhere. Also, the author notes, functional training is about movement, not equipment.

There's a lengthy and informative series of several chapters before you get to the nuts and bolts of the specific exercises. This is good thing. Similar to warming up before a workout, it's important to understand the why's of doing a particular exercise before actually attempting it.

I've been wanting to reform my old, stale workout plan for a while now. I intend to use Functional Training as my guide to accomplish this.

This is well illustrated with photographs and delivers clear information about Eco Dogs and the work they do. My kids enjoyed it and so did I. I wish there were more books about Eco Dogs out there, but this book is one of the very few.

A Cool Book About Cool Dogs

I had never heard of "Eco Dogs" before seeing this book. They are working dogs who use their incredible sense of smell to track things in nature. They might find Burmese pythons (an invasive species in the Everglades that needs to be removed) or sniff out sea turtle nests (so scientists can protect the eggs). They work in airports to help capture animal smugglers. They can point to the scat of elusive animals like tigers, or most amazingly of all, orcas (killer whales) under the sea. How's that for a good sense of smell?

ECO DOGS was a fun, interesting book. I appreciated learning that high-strung shelter dogs (who love nothing more than being outdoors, sniffing around all day) are often used for the job. I also appreciated the insights on training and rewarding the dogs.

Bearport Publishing specializes in creating high-interest, easy-to-read nonfiction. ECO DOGS belongs to a 20-book series about "Dog Heroes" for middle school students. If you have a kid in your life who loves nature and dogs, they are sure to want to learn about eco dogs.

About the Author

Hiroko Fujita is a traditional ohanashi obaasan (storytelling grandma). She spent her childhood in the rural mountain town of Miharu in Fukushima Prefecture, where she heard hundreds of ancient folktales from village elders. A graduate of Japan Women's University who was an early childhood education for five decades, she now travels Japan, teaching young mothers the old tales. The author of thirty-one books in Japanese, she lives in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

Fran Stallings, a professional storyteller based in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, interpreted for Mrs. Fujita's twelve storytelling tours of twenty-two American states, Japan and Singapore. Stallings edited and adapted English translations of Mrs. Fujita's storytelling handbook Stories to Play With (August House, 1999) and a collection of forty-seven tales known throughout Japan, Folktales from the Japanese Countryside (Libraries Unlimited, 2008). Stallings' other publications include articles, stories, songs, and four CDs. Her academic training in biology informs her environmental work as “EarthTeller.”

In 2003, Fujita and Stallings received the National (U.S.) Storytelling Network's International StoryBridge ORACLE Award for their work on both sides of the Pacific. They hope that these books will make Mrs. Fujita's stories available to English-speaking story lovers everywhere.

Translator Makiko Ishibashi attended the University of Tokyo. She lived in St. Louis while her husband did postdoctoral work and their two sons attended American schools. Now their sons are grown, and she lives in Saitama, Japan, with her husband. Her current interest is in the ukiyoe (woodblock prints) of Hiroshige, and Edo (the old name for Tokyo). She blogs bilingually at “A Hundred Views Of Edo”

Asian Folktales You Won't Find Elsewhere

if you are looking for rare folktales, here is a book of tales collected by Ms. Fujita in the Japanese countryside. This PG-rated collection includes tales of marriage and family life, rural scenes and activities, and much more. Great for libraries, too, these stories were collected and edited by storytellers.

Hidden gem

A collection of previously unpublished traditional Japanese stories, shared with Fran Stallings by her old friend and storyteller Fujita Hiroko. The two friends have told many stories together, live, during their working collaboration, and this collection brings out their shared enjoyment and love of stories. One for your collection if you enjoy traditional tales, or would like to explore them. The gentle humour and soft words carry concepts worth their weight in gold.

Out of the ordinary and the commonplace these stories dazzle with magic and transport us to exotic lands and ancient times. Insight into Japanese culture and sagacity is rare and wonderful to read. Savor each story one at a time like a sweet treat. Or read the book cover to cover in one sitting like some great feast for the heart and mind. We hear the characters in ‘The Contest of Silence’ eating the manju cake - amu, amu, amu and like them we want more of these cakes - stories. The horse went pakkora, pakkora as it clopped along in Horse Dengaku and we can hear the hoofs clicking on the roadside and are immediately caught up in their path. We learn of the Kitsune or Fox trickster who may fool people but it may be for their own good. The title story alone with its age-old wisdom is worth the price of the book!

About the Author
Glen Ebisch lives with his wife in western Massachusetts. His interests include philosophy, yoga, and New England folktales of the supernatural.

The Crying Girl is Glen's fifth novel. Two previous mysteries, A Rocky Road and Unwanted Inheritance, and two romances, To Breathe Again and Woven Hearts, are also available.

Pretty good but could have been something great

I wanted very much to enjoy this book and I did to a point. The characters were fully developed and real, and the book started with a spooky scene that set the tone for the rest of the book. The problem was the ending; though not so much as it was rushed, the ending just kind of puttered out. Simply, it wasn't as well developed as the rest of the book.
At only 184 pages, Ebisch could have stretched his novel out for another 50/100 pages, and he should have resolved some of the minor story lines which were integral parts of the novel, story lines that he had begun so well. But without these being resolved, the novel felt unfinished and, dare I say, amateurish.
I am going to read his second book in the series, Grave Justice, to see if, hopefully, he's done a better job with that one.

Started out with a great story line but....

This story started out as a good read but shortly thereafter it started to fizzle. It lacked the real suspense factor I thought was going to be there when you have the setting in an old boarded up and abandon house.

An Outstanding Technical Commentary

This ICC commentary on Acts by the late C.K. Barrett is refreshingly thorough. Barrett dives deeply into the text without going into immaterial digressions and without making thoughtless conjectures. I find that when I need to figure out a particular confusing verse in Acts, Barrett always offers aid. He does deal with possible redactions of the text, but never to discredit it. Barrett's exegesis of the Greek text leaves no stone unturned. He frequently quotes other ancient Greek, Roman, and Jewish writers when their writings shed more light on the text. This work is written in light of all the major moves and interpretations in pre-1990s Acts scholarship.

Although this is an English commentary, where there is Greek, it is written out in Greek. While some commentaries transliterate, Barrett keeps the original. The quotes from French and German scholars are usually left in the original as well.

I would recommend this commentary to anyone who is looking for a technical commentary on Acts. It is certainly my preferred commentary on this wonderful and complex book. If you are looking For a devotional/homiletical one, I would definitely recommend William Willimon's Acts commentary in the Interpretation series. If you want something more lightweight than Barrett's that still goes into some technical and theological issues, then Luke Timothy Johnson's in the Sacra Pagina series is a fine one.
