Best of the AvP trilogy
By Angelus Draven
I absolutely LOVE this book! I think they did a real good job it. What i especially liked about this one is that the author would not only give you insight on what the humans were thinking, the predators also. This book answered alot of my questions that I had about the Yautja(predators) and also other interesting facts. I agree with some reviewers that the Aliens were not in this book much...thats actually how it is in all 3 books. I've read the other books Predators books as well -- Predator: Cold War, Big Game, and Concrete Jungle. I've also read pretty much all the comic books that Dark Horse has published. Dont get me wrong, i enjoyed these books(concrete jungle & cold war), but they never gave me what I wanted..which was more about the Predator. I was totally relieved and excited that the authors went into it! And for a bonus, i've also read AvP: Hunters Planet and AvP: War. Basically for those books, I only found the end of them interesting. This was because pretty much all the action was saved for the end. What I didn't I found troublesome about this Trilogy was that there was a HUGE plot hole in the story. If you read all 3, you'll know what I mean.
Bottom line -- if you'd like to know more about the Predator, this is the probably the best source!

Husband read it in 2 hours!
By Erica Vandegrift
I bought this book for my husband who is an avid reader and sci-fi fan (and of course an Arnold Schwarzeneggar fan). I only bought this one to start in case he didnt like it. But he sat down and read it in about 2 hours give or take 30 minutes. So I will be buying him the rest of the series.

an entertaining pulp
By themysticanimal
i bought this book thinking that it was a graphic novel, and i felt disappointed after realising that it's not. so i decided afterwards to finish reading it fast.but to my surprise ,i ended up liking it.
i wanted to give it a five star, but the fact that it's an adaptatoin from a graphic story by randy stradley and chris warner, and that it's written by two people, a father and daughter team, steve perry and stephani perry, changed my mind.
the story.human colonization of outer space,a planet called ryushi,a wrong choice, for we discover later that the predators use it as a training ground.the human with their cattle and ranches, the predators with their aliens fox hunting.the ranchers don't like their female japanese boss.a young predator warrior doesn't like his captin.discoveries of both sides , the aliens break loose and the plot thickens.
what i really liked about the book is it's depiction of the predators army life ,their language and the human encounter ,especially on pages 164 and 165.this form of greeting, placing the right hand on the left sholder of a friend and shaking it slightly,is used by sudanese men in sudan africa.i don't know if the writers know that or not.
an enjoyable pulp.

The Forty Rules of Love: A Novel of Rumi, by Elif Shafak

A mesmerizing tale of love that tells the fascinating story of Rumi’s life, from the author of The Bastard of Istanbul and The Architect’s Apprentice

This lyrical, imaginative novel by Elif Shafak, the bestselling author of The Bastard of Istanbul and the most widely read female writer in Turkey, unfolds in two parallel narratives. In the thirteenth century, the Sufi poet Rumi encounters his spiritual mentor, the infamous wandering dervish known as Shams of Tabriz, and is transformed from a successful but unhappy cleric into a committed mystic and advocate of love. In present day Massachusetts, an unhappy American housewife named Ella Rubenstein, inspired by Rumi's message of love, finds the courage to undertake her own transformation. Blending East and West, past and present, Shafak provides a compelling, dramatic, and exuberant account of how love works in the world.

From Publishers Weekly
Celebrated Turkish novelist Shafak (The Bastard of Istanbul) serves up a curious blend of mediocre hen lit and epic historical to underwhelming results. In present-day Boston, dull suburban mother and cheated-on wife Ella Rubinstein takes a job as a reader for a literary agent and becomes entranced by Aziz Zahara, the author of a manuscript about the relationship between 13th-century poet Rumi and Sufi mystic Shams that, for better or for worse, becomes a story-within-a-story. Aziz and Ella strike up an e-mail relationship, largely made up of Ella's midlife crisis and Aziz's philosophical replies. Meanwhile, Aziz's novel, Sweet Blasphemy, is occasionally interesting but mostly dull, weighed down by Rufi's and Shams's theological musings. Its better moments concern tangential characters; Rumi's son, Aladdin, who is resentful of his father's closeness to the mystic, and Rumi's adopted daughter, Kimya, whose doomed marriage to Shams is touching in a way Ella's failed relationship with her husband never manages. The rumblings against Shams reach a peak, and Ella and Aziz finally meet, tying the story lines together into a readable, if not enthralling, tale. (Feb.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* As in her previous book, The Bastard of Istanbul (2007), Shafak, a courageous, best-selling Turkish writer, boldly links East and West in converging narratives. In present-day Massachusetts, Ella, an unhappy housewife on the cusp of 40, begins reading manuscripts for a literary agency, and soon finds herself exchanging personal e-mails with Aziz Zahara, a wandering Sufi photographer and the author of Ella’s first assignment, an enthralling novel titled Sweet Blasphemy. It fictionalizes the true story of the esteemed thirteenth-century Muslim teacher Rumi, who undergoes a profound transformation when the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz, a renegade of strange and unnerving powers, comes to town. The two become inseparable, and as Shams shares the liberating “forty rules of love,” Rumi becomes a rebel mystic, the inventor of the “ecstatic dance” of the whirling dervishes, and a fervent and cherished poet. Under Aziz’s influence, Ella also breaks free of convention and opens herself to cosmic forces. Infused with Sufi mysticism and Rumi’s incomparable lyrics, and sweetly human in its embrace of our flaws and failings, Shafak’s seductive, shrewd, and affecting novel brilliantly revives the revelations of Shams and Rumi, and daringly illuminates the differences between religion and spirituality, censure and compassion, fear and love of life in our own violent world. --Donna Seaman

Review
"A captivating and wise book . . . The tale of the fated meeting, spiritual companionship, and tragic parting of [Rumi and Shams of Tabriz] is beautifully recounted in The Forty Rules of Love. . . . Shafak draws on facts from Rumi's and Sham's biographies and brings them to life with deft storytelling."
--Associated Press

"A gorgeous, jeweled, luxurious  book . . . The past and the present fit together beautifully in a passionate defense of passion itself."
--The Times (London)

"In this appealing fable, Turkish author Elif Shafak toggles between characters from different times: a modern American housewife and a thirteenth-century poet. . . . The universal theme is struggle between the rational mind and the aching heart. Shafak's heroine yields to the latter and never looks back."

I so wanted to love this book . . .
By godzilla
I tried hard to overlook its quirks, but I found myself increasingly put off by the author's fondness for telling rather than showing and by the wooden characters (especially, sadly, Rumi and Shams) who seem to endlessly proclaim their beliefs and feelings without having any inner lives. I couldn't connect much with any of them. Also, the book seems carelessly edited. In one instance, the character of Rumi's wife gives a first-person account of his dismay when she cleaned the books in his library during their first year of marriage: yet a few sentences further on, she mentions this happening "after eight years of marriage". Word choices sometimes seem inappropriate or at least clumsy, which may be due to the author writing in English rather than Turkish (still, an editor should have helped with that).

I did stay with it until the end, due to the appeal of the subject matter, the historical period, some interesting perspectives on Islam and the Abrahamic religions, and the beguiling Forty Rules themselves. Alas, I can only give it a lukewarm recommendation.

Such a delight - I didn't want it to end!
By Michelle Walker
This book is like butter - soooooooo delicious and so necessary. It's been such a long time since I read a book I love this much! Wonderful story - historically and spiritually. Yes the contemporary story of Ella - her character is kind of annoying - BUT I think the author did that on purpose so you judge her and thereby later in the story can examine your capacity for compassion (or lack thereof) as one of the most important Forty Rules. I'm already looking for my next book by this same author. So you can check my review style against what you might like: super boring/inane fiction books I've read recently - Girl on The Train, Gone Girl, and the super disturbing, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. If you loved those books, then The Forty Rules of Love may be too deep for you!

A charming, witty story punctuated by the wisdom of the ages.
By Jinson
A charming, witty story punctuated by the wisdom of the ages. Right away, Elif Shafik tells us what will happen to Shams of Tabriz at the end of the story, but this is quite skilful; what is important about the story is the tortuous route that Shams chose to take to that final pass, not the event itself. Additionally the modern story makes the ancient tale much more poignant and relevant than it would have been told on its own.

The tragic nature of both ancient and modern tales serves to highlight the joy of the Sufi message; all of us have divinity within and only need to search for it. The backdrop of life can be immensely distracting or just the right experience to follow this quest. It only depends on your point of view, some discipline and you can grasp hold of that lasting joy.

Shams, the iconoclast, who consistently destroys the empty notions which litter his faith, is a familiar figure to this Zen Buddhist reader. 'If you see the Buddha, kill him.' There is no general notion of Buddha that is of any use because we need to experience what he means at first hand. Only then can we understand his teachings fully. But that journey is entirely personal. Sufism puts across the same message and I find this very comforting.

Being a complete newcomer to Sufism, I have learned a great amount here and want to know more. Any book that has this kind of effect on me ranks very highly in my estimation.

Islam, Globalization and PostmodernityFrom Routledge

This book examines the cultural responses of Muslims to the transformations, contradictions and challenges confronting contemporary Islam as it moves towards the twenty-first century. The diffusion of populations, the globalization of culture and the forces of postmodernity have shaken the world like never before. These developments have generated a debate among Muslims which, as the contributors to this volume show, will have far-reaching consequences not just for the Muslim world, but for relations between Islam and the West more generally.

Review
"Excellent and extremely important."
-Bryan S. Turner, Dean of Arts, Deakin University, Geelong
"In this book, anthropology is coming of age. The globalization of Islam is one of the most important features of the modern age and effects [sic] us all. Ahmed and Donnan have skillfully compiled a volume that gives essential insights into a complex marriage between Islam, the state and society in an age of instant communications. Issues of race, prejudice, gender, space, fundamentalism and migration are all skillfully presented to give a new and enlightened perspective on Islam in the post-modern age."
-Andre Singer, Adjunct Professor of Anthropology, the University of Southern California, Los Angeles

Old Man Goriot (Penguin Classics), by Honore de Balzac

Monsieur Goriot is one of a disparate group of lodgers at Mademe Vauquer's dingy Parisian boarding house. At first his wealth inspires respect, but as his circumstances are mysteriously reduced he becomes shunned by those around him, and soon his only remaining visitors are his two beautifully dressed daughters. Goriot's fate is intertwined with two other fellow boarders: the young social climber Eugene Rastignac, who sees a way to gain the acceptance and wealth he craves, and the enigmatic figure of Vautrin, who is hiding darker secrets than anyone. Weaving a compelling and panoramic story of love, money, self-sacrifice, corruption, greed and ambition, Old Man Goriot is Balzac's acknowledged masterpiece. A key novel in his Comédie Humaine series, it is a vividly realized portrait of bourgeois Parisian society in the years following the French Revolution.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Review
''[A] meticulously observed story of love and greed . . . Reminiscent of King Lear, it also resonates today with the clarity of the poet's barbed pen . . . (Narrator) Frederick Davidson is brilliant, deadening his voice for the dreadful daughters and their ghastly husbands, as well as portraying each ridiculous tenant in the boardinghouse . . . But it is Goriot's deathbed scene that causes the hairs to rise on the backs of listeners' neck. Listeners…cannot remain unmoved.'' --AudioFile

There's a good reason that this is commonly used as an introduction to Balzac: it's one of his best and most focused works (not that I've read them all, of course...). He wasn't a wholly consistent author (and neither would *you* be, had you written 120+ novels)--at times, he can be downright tedious. Not here, though: Old Goriot is a fast read, and utterly gripping.
The character of Goriot is handled quite delicately: Balzac plays mercilessly on our sympathy for an old man victimized by his daughters (intentional shades of King Lear here). It's not a uni-dimensional depiction, however; as Goriot's boundless love seems at times to go beyond the merely paternal--he may be a Christ-figure, but he's certainly not a straightforward one. Of course, the real show-stealer here is Vautrin, the master criminal. As much as Balzac fancied himself a historian, he was really at his most entertaining when he went over the top, as he does here: Vautrin is wonderfully demonic, and one can't but get a kick out of reading him. In contrast to these twin personalities, which tower above anyone else in the book, you have the titular protagonist, Eugene de Rastignac, a perfectly ordinary sort of guy--your archetypical 'young man from the provinces'. He provides a good counterpoint to all the madness going on, and you can't help but like the guy, even if he's not really an extraordinary person.
Anyway: you should read this. Yes--YOU. I mean come on, you really ought to read at least one Balzac in your life. And if you like it, you can go on to Lost Illusions and Cousin Bette. Highly recommended.

An exemplary tragicomedy
By A.J.
Balzac's "Old Goriot" both celebrates and satirizes early 19th Century Parisian society and its idiosyncrasies. In terms of the variety of characters it introduces and the themes covered, it is a novel of incredibly wide scope, written with efficiency and some of the most beautiful prose, at least via Marion Crawford's English translation.
Goriot is an elderly gentleman living in a Paris boardinghouse in 1819. He used to be a prosperous vermicelli merchant, but hard times of late have forced him to pawn off his remaining precious possessions and move into the cheapest room available in the house. Since running afoul of the landlady Madame Vauquer, whose romantic attentions he once spurned, he has become an object of ridicule to the other boarders, due to his shabby clothes and apparent senility.
Most of the novel's action, however, centers around another of the boarders, a law student named Eugene de Rastignac who comes from a modest family. Rastignac's situation and motives are easy for any urban young man to identify with: He is eager to climb into the upper echelons of Paris society, but he finds to his dismay that the fashionable Parisian women are not interested in paupers. His wealthy cousin, Madame de Beauseant, advises him that he must be ruthless to make it in high society. With his cousin's help, Rastignac acquaints himself with two young society matrons, Anastasie, the Countess de Restaud, and Delphine, the Baroness de Nucingen, who happen to be Goriot's daughters.

Goriot's relationship to his daughters provides the basis for the novel. He spoiled them rotten as little girls; consequently, they grew up irresponsible, greedy, and ungrateful. Having married wealthy men, they both seek consolation from their unhappy marriages through reckless spending and extramarital beaus. Despite their faults, Goriot loves and cares for his daughters with something more like a neurotic obsession than warm, paternal devotion. You can't help feel sorry for the guy, suffering from his delusions, selling everything he owns, and living in squalor so that his daughters, who are unable or unwilling to fend for themselves or fight their own battles, can stay financially solvent.

There is an interesting subplot involving another boarder at Madame Vauquer's house, a devilish, unscrupulous fellow named Vautrin who may not be what he initially appears to be. Vautrin knows Rastignac is trying to get his foot in the door of Parisian society and he knows he needs money to do it. He proposes this scheme: Rastignac will marry a poor girl dwelling at the boardinghouse named Victorine; Vautrin will have Victorine's brother killed so that she'll inherit the whole of her father's fortune, which will bring Rastignac into big money and high society, and he can pay Vautrin for collusion. The way Balzac plays out this scenario without letting it become an interference with the main story line of Rastignac's relationship to Goriot's daughters is quite a deft feat of plotting.

Inadequate Translation of GORIOT
By reading man
The problem here is the translation. Done by Ellen Marriage for the Dent collected edition of Balzac at the beginning of the 20th century, it can be best described as workwomanlike but anachronistic. There are too many stilted passages and archaic word choices of the "Gadzooks" type.

A better choice is Raphael's version for the Nortion series or even Marian Cooper's in Penguin, though it was done 50 years ago.

The yarn itself is one of Balzac's best, though you can find dissenters (Martin Turnell, no fan of Balzac, calls it one of his worst in THE NOVEL IN FRANCE). To be honest, the best of Balzac is not as good as the best of Flaubert, Stendhal, or Proust, but given his ability to keep the reader turning pages in spite of ragged prose and melodramatic excess, GORIOT is still "living literature" and a classic of French literature.

Delightful Book
By mwamba3
This book is a delightful collection of 55 familiar english nursery rhymes re-worked for South African children. It weaves in many familiar South African words and images (depicting South Africa's diverse cultures, people, languages, animals, homes, way of life etc) with which the children of Southern Africa can identify.
( eg "Pussy cat pussy cat where did you go? I went to Madiba to say:'hello!'" :)
Beautifully illustrated and brilliantly adapted , this book is sure to be treasured by all children who love Africa, both those who have grown up there, and those curious or enchanted by the wonder of Africa.

I grew up as an expat in Southern Africa and purchased this book for my child who is adopted from South Africa. Both of us have loved it~ I for the memories it evokes and the familiarity of the images and words, and they for the humor and what it teaches them about their homeland. A special shared experience as we snuggle and laugh together and enjoy Africa in rhyme.

Two minor points to note..
1-a glossary is not included, which is a shame as I imagine it would be quite helpful for those not familiar with the South African words or pronunciation, however most words are in english and I would certainly not let that put you off purchasing this special book.
2- There is a couple of images of witch doctors included which may put some people off ..a big deal is not made of them but I did feel it worth a mention.

Overall I highly recommend this book!!

Amazon.com Review
Featured Recipe: Santas

These jolly fellas bring good cheer and hearty ho-ho-hos.

You'll Need
  • 48 uncoated cake balls (please see separate recipe)
  • 3 deep, microwave-safe plastic bowls
  • 64 oz (1.8 kg) white candy coating
  • 2 to 3 oz (55 to 85 g) pink candy coating
  • 1 to 2 oz (30 to 55 g) chocolate candy coating
  • 48 lollipop sticks
  • Styrofoam block
  • 16 oz (455 g) red candy coating
  • Toothpicks
  • 48 white Sixlets
  • 48 pink confetti sprinkles
  • 96 white candy-coated sunflower seeds
  • Sanding sugar
  • Black edible-ink pen
  • Peach edible-ink pen
To Decorate
  • Have the cake balls chilled and in the refrigerator.
  • In one of the microwave-safe bowls, melt together 48 oz (1.4 kg) of the white candy coating with the pink and chocolate candy coating, following the instructions on the package. Add more or less of each color to achieve a darker or lighter shade for Santa’s face. The coating should be about 3 in (7.5 cm) deep for easier dipping.
  • When you are ready to dip, remove a few cake balls at a time from the refrigerator, keeping the rest chilled.
  • One at a time, dip about 1⁄2 in (12 mm) of the tip of a lollipop stick into the melted candy coating and insert the dipped end straight into a cake ball, pushing it no more than halfway through. Dip the cake pop into the melted coating. Gently lift the pop out of the coating and tap off any excess: Hold it over the bowl in your left hand, and tap your left wrist gently with your right hand. If you use the hand holding the cake pop to shake off excess coating, the force of the movement will be too strong and could cause the cake ball to loosen or fly off the lollipop stick. Tapping the wrist holding the cake pop absorbs some of the impact. The excess coating will fall off, but you will need to rotate the lollipop stick so the coating doesn’t build up on one side, making it too heavy on that side. If too much coating starts to build up at the base of the stick, simply use your finger to wipe it off, spinning the lollipop stick at the same time. This can happen if the coating is too thin or too hot. It’s not as hard as it sounds; it just takes a little practice. Stand the pop firmly in a hole in the Styrofoam block. Repeat with the remaining cake balls. Let dry.
  • Meanwhile, melt the red candy coating in a microwave-safe bowl. When dry, dip each pop in the red coating about one-third of the way up the sides, at a slight angle. Return to the Styrofoam block and let dry completely.
  • Melt the remaining white candy coating in another microwave-safe bowl. Using a toothpick, dot some of the melted white coating on one side of each cake pop in position for the ball of Santa’s hat, and attach a white Sixlet to each.
  • Using the toothpick, apply more white coating for each Santa’s beard. Place a pink confetti sprinkle for a mouth on each. Continue layering white coating on the pop for a nice full beard. Once it starts to set, it’s easy to continue adding layers. Let dry completely in the Styrofoam block.
  • Dot on more melted white coating above the confetti sprinkles and attach 2 white sunflower seeds to each in position for the mustache and let dry.
  • Apply more white coating at the base of the hat and sprinkle sanding sugar on top while the coating is still wet. (Sprinkle over a bowl so you can catch the sugar and reuse it.) Use some of the remaining tinted white coating to dot on a cute nose using a toothpick. Using the black edible-ink pen, draw eyes on the Santas. Draw cheeks with the peach edible-ink pen. Dab the cheeks so they look blended.
  • Return each Santa to the Styrofoam block as you finish. Let the cake pops dry completely.

    Such a fun book!
    By Emily Siska
I specifically requested this book for Christmas, having stumbled upon Bakerella's first Cake Pops book earlier in the year. Even though I'm not nearly talented enough to pull off most of her designs (which are fairly intricate and elaborate), the pictures definitely get the creative baking juices flowing! I've made several batches of basic cake balls since then, and all of them have been tremendous hits with my family (especially dark chocolate fudge cake with candy cane Hershey Kisses as a coating - seriously, try it!). At some point I'll attempt a few of the more simple designs in the book, but for now, I'm happy just being inspired.

I loved Bakerella's first book, but I think I love this one even more. I gasped with every turn of the page. The cake pop designs are so darling and original. Even if you never make a cake pop, Angie's creative use a sprinkles, color and design will have you re-imagining other crafts in your life from scrapbooking to cookie decorating.

If you love cake pops, baking, the holiday season, Bakerella, or just cuteness in general, you'll love this book! :)
