This YA story had some really cute and enjoyable moments, but overall just okay.

I will admit that the cover of this book is what really drew me in. I had previously read a book by Heidi R. Kling and really enjoyed it, so I figured this one was worth a shot. Not Okay, Cupid had some cute moments and there were some things I really enjoyed. But on the whole, this book was just okay for me. I think part of my problem here was simply my age. While I do enjoy YA books, these characters were a bit hard to take at times.

Hazel McCallister has her life all planned out. Her and her perfect boyfriend Jay will graduate and attend the same college before becoming engaged and eventually getting married. But before she gets the picket fence, Hazel catches Jay with her best friend Kimmy. Embarrassed by the public way it was revealed, Kimmy's brother Felix James offers to help Hazel get revenge on them by pretending to be together to make Jay jealous. But the more time Hazel and Felix spend together, the more the lines between real and fake become. Even though Hazel and Felix start to develop real feelings for one another, in the end it comes down to whether Hazel wants revenge or Felix more.

I really liked Felix. He was cute and sweet, and I really felt like his feelings for Hazel were genuine. He had always liked her, but he had never said anything. Hazel thought that he was a slacker that was nothing but a player, and yet he had more to him than anyone knew. Hazel had everything planned out and thought she knew what she wanted. As the story progressed though, it became clear that she didn't know herself as well as she though she did though. I liked her and Felix together, and I really wish that these two had talked more. I felt like once they realized that it wasn't just a plot for revenge that they needed to communicate with one another. While some of that is age and immaturity, it was a bit frustrating here since they both made some poor decisions that easily would have been avoided had they spoken with one another.

Another big issue I had here was that there wasn't a lot of depth or development here. For the majority of the story I felt like Hazel and Felix didn't really spend much time together, so their connection while there didn't feel strong to me. I didn't believe that these two could possibly be in love, even having known each other for years. They simply didn't know one another well enough or spend enough time together for it to feel genuine. The other thing that bothered me here was that the dialogue was very repetitive and at times words or sayings used were downright cheesy. A few times wouldn't have been noticeable, but it was for the entire story and it got to the point that it distracted me from what was going on because I just kept rolling my eyes. I did think that this story had some cute moments though, and if you are looking for something light and sweet you might give this one a shot. If you are looking for something a bit deeper or mature though, this one might not be for you.

Fun, Light-Hearted Read!!

Not Okay, Cupid is the story of how two teenagers fall in love in a unusual way. Hazel thought she had the perfect life with good grades, a perfect boyfriend named Jay and a best friend named Kimmy, until one day when her boyfriend cheats on her with her best friend. Felix is Kimmy's brother and hates what her sister did to her best friend and wants to help Hazel get revenge on the both of them for what they did.

Felix sets up a plan to get revenge on his sister and Hazel's scummy ex-boyfriend at the school's Valentine's Day dance but realizes that he has feeling's for Hazel that he never thought would have. Even though Hazel is getting over a broken heart, she also starts to feels something for Felix but doesn't want to say anything. The night of the dance brings the plan out in the open and a ending that will make it bittersweet for two people that never thought it was possible to be in love.

This book will make you stay up late in the night just to finish it so you know what happens with Hazel and Felix, This may be a original story line but it puts a whole new spin on the getting revenge on a ex-boyfriend and falling in love with who's helping you. I could see this being a perfect book to read anytime you want a break from heavy reads!

Very sweet

Hazel has plans, big plans. She's got her whole life figured out until at least the age of thirty. She will marry her high school boyfriend Jay and will have a great, perfect family with him. Of course that won't happen until after university and while they're students they will of course stay a couple. Only then Jay betrays Hazel with her best friend Kimmy and Hazel is heartbroken.

Kimmy's brother Felix offers Hazel a revenge plan. Together they will make Jay jealous. Felix has always been there for Hazel, she thinks she knows everything about him. Their easy banter is something that manages to cheer her up. It isn't such hard work to plot with Felix. Only both Hazel and Felix might like the plan a little too much. What will happen when it works and is that what they actually want?

Not Okay Cupid is such a sweet Valentine's Day story. I liked it from the start. It's cute and fun, the perfect cheerful reading material. That's what I enjoyed most about this book. Heidi R. Kling delivers a wonderful flirty story about two people who are meant for each other. It's romantic and the main characters are adorable.

Hazel is a nice girl who works hard to achieve her goals. She thinks Felix doesn't care about any of that, but maybe that isn't true at all. I liked them both a lot. I think it was a good idea of Heidi R. Klink to write from two different perspectives. It works really well and it makes the reader love the main characters even more. If you're looking for something light and lovely Not Okay Cupid is an excellent choice.

Amazing

A real gem

I first read this book over 20 years ago, and since then have gone back to it two or three times. Though written as a children's book, it does a great job grappling with some universal and adult issues, namely duty, friendship, loyalty, and mercy -- it seems to plot the progress of a 10th century everyman from barbarism to civilization, and it makes the journey fun and interesting as well. My one gripe would be that Jestyn's transformation from Thormond's thrall to best friend is too quick and total to be believable, but no matter...
i loved this very overlooked book, and have always been amazed that no one ever made it into a movie.

A fast-paced story about the early Vikings

Jestyn was a cow herder with no future until he was bought as a slave by Thormod, a Dane. When they fought together against an enemy, Thormod and Jestyn realized that they would stay by each other side forever. But on arriving at Thormod's homestead, it is found out that Thormod's father has been killed by two childhood friends of Thormod. They had sworn the "Blood Feud" (a fight to the death between two opponents) when their father was killed accidentally. Jestyn decides to join Thormod in this blood feud, which last months even years as their plans are interrupted by their country's war, a long sea voyage and an oath that they would postpone the blood feud. This adventure will take the reader over roads less traveled as they follow Jestyn through Russia and beyond as he seeks to find his true destiny.

The topics presented and methods of presenting them were chosen with the following ideas in mind; to keep the treat­ ment as elementary as possible, to introduce some of the recently devel­ oped algebraic methods of handling problems of algebraic geometry, to show how these methods are related to the older analytic and geometric methods, and to apply the general methods to specific geometric prob­ lems. These criteria led to a selection of topics from the theory of curves, centering around birational transformations and linear series. Experience in teaching the material showed the need of an intro­ duction to the underlying algebra and projective geometry, so this is supplied in the first two chapters. The inclusion of this material makes the book almost entirely self-contained. Methods of presentation, proof of theorems, and problems, have been adapted from various sources. We should mention, in particular, Severi-Laffier, Vorlesungen uber Algebraische Geometrie, van der Waerden, Algebraische Geometrie and Moderne Algebra, and lecture notes of S. Lefschetz and O. Zariski. We also wish to thank Mr. R. L. Beinert and Prof. G. L. Walker for suggestions and assistance with the proof, and particularly Prof. Saunders MacLane for a very careful examination and criticism of an early version of the work. R. J. Best introduction to algebraic geometry

My advisor in graduate school told me to read this book. My office mate followed his advice. From then on, whenever I asked a question of my office mate, he stared into space searching for an answer, and then he replied, "Read Walker." In my opinion, it is the single most important book you can read if you want to become an algebraic geometer, or if you want to understand what an algebraic geometer is talking about. I am astonished to see that it is out of print. If the book has any flaws, I haven't been able to find them. Thank God for Robert J. Walker.

About the Author
Richard L. Scheaffer, Professor Emeritus of Statistics, University of Florida, received his Ph.D. in statistics from Florida State University. Accompanying a career of teaching, research and administration, Dr. Scheaffer has led efforts on the improvement of statistics education throughout the school and college curriculum. Co-author of five textbooks, he was one of the developers of the Quantitative Literacy Project that formed the basis of the data analysis strand in the curriculum standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He also led the task force that developed the AP Statistics Program, for which he served as Chief Faculty Consultant. Dr. Scheaffer is a Fellow and past president of the American Statistical Association, a past chair of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, and an advisor on numerous statistics education projects.

Dr. Mendenhall served in the Navy in the Korean War and obtained a Ph.D. in Statistics at North Carolina State University. After receiving his Ph.D , he was a professor in the Mathematics Department at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania before moving to Gainesville in 1963 where he was the first chairman of the Department of Statistics at the University of Florida. Dr. Mendenhall published articles in some of the top statistics journals, such as Biometika and Technometrics, however, he is more widely known for his prolific textbook career. He authored or co-authored approximately 13 statistics textbooks and several books about his childhood.

Lyman Ott earned his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Education and Master's degree in Mathematics from Bucknell University, and Ph.D in Statistics from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. After two years working in statistics in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Ott became assistant professor in the Statistic Department at the University of Florida in 1968 and was named associate professor in 1972. He joined Merrell-National laboratories in 1975 as head of the Biostatistics Department and then head of the company's Research Data Center. He later became director of Biomedical Information Systems, Vice President of Global Systems and Quality Improvement in Research and Development, and Senior Vice President Business Process Improvement and Biometrics. He retired from the pharmaceutical industry in 1998, and now serves as consultant and Board of Advisors member for Abundance Technologies, Inc. Dr. Ott has published extensively in scientific journals and authored or co-authored seven college textbooks including Basic Statistical Ideas for Managers, Statistics: A Tool for the Social Sciences and An Introduction to Statistical Methods and Data Analysis. He has been a member of the Industrial Research Institute, the Drug Information Association and the Biometrics Society. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and received the Biostatistics Career Achievement Award from the Pharmaceutical research and Manufacturers of America in 1998. He was also an All-American soccer player in college and is a member of the Bucknell University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Ken Gerow, Professor of Statistics at the University of Wyoming, earned a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology (minor, Statistics) from the University of Guelph. He has been on the faculty at U.W. ever since completing his Ph.D. in Statistics at Cornell University. He has devoted his career to empowering biologists with statistical concepts and tools. His publications are in a wide range of biological disciplines and journals, with much of his work being directed towards fisheries science. A distaste for making students do arithmetic (rather than thinking about science and valid use of appropriate statistical tools) led to the creation of the interactive Excel tools that accompany this text.

Unfortunate, but fixable.

This is a very accessible and readable intro to survey sampling. However, they seem to expect the reader to use the accompanying excel sheets to do most calculations. That is the only explanation for the many, many typos / errors. (I tried to keep track intially, but since they don't seem to even have an errata for the book, it seemed pointless.)
The excel sheets do seem to work fairly well and if it was 1990 that would be sufficient. Trying to reproduce their work in R, only to find yet another typo was very frustrating. So I wanted to offer a few suggestions to future buyers of this book:

1. Consider buying an older edition, I went with the 2nd edition and it is nearly identical except there are discrepancies in the problem sets. However, the 2nd edition is cleaner and actually has better formulas than the current edition. I much prefer the 2nd edition.

2. I had trouble finding the Excel sheets, but do find and download them, because they are well worth the effort. They provide quick, easy answers to check yourself on most problems. (They are supposed to come with the book, but I did not have the accompanying CD.)

Filled with Errors

This book is horrible. In nearly every chapter, there are multiple errors. Finding at least one typo in a textbook is almost guaranteed, yet this book contains so many that it's incredibly distracting, confusing, and embarrassing. In Statistics, notation is key to understanding formulas and problems. Many examples in the book lack proper "hats" and "bars", and even omit very important numbers, such as sample proportions. These typos are inexcusable, unprofessional, and are much greater errors than the grammatical typos usually seen in textbooks. I recommend using a different textbook if possible.

Replete with Mistakes

I am a grad student taking a class that uses this book, and conceptually, I like the book. However, I have come across so many errors in just the first five chapters that I wonder whether there was an editor for this book. I spent a good amount of time trying to figure out how they came up with one particular number just to find that it was a misprint. In one problem, there is even a blank table where there should be data. Frankly, I am just completely disappointed and dumbfounded that this book is out there being sold as a professional product, and I am angry that I paid good money for it. I know most books will have the odd typo of some sort, but I have found way too many in this book, and it has cost me extra time which I do not have in grad school. From what I have seen with other classmates though, the 6th edition seems to be in better order.

About the Author
Magdalene Meretrix has worked as a prostitute, escort, phone sex worker, professional submissive, and porn film actress. Her last full-time sex work job was in a legal Nevada brothel. She now works as a writer, paid escort and web page designer, and is an active advocate for sex workers'rights. Her articles have appeared in "Scarlet Letters" and "The Wyrmhole," and last year she chided Ann Landers in print for Ann' condescending attitude toward sex workers.

A yawn to say the least.

Thought I'd discover 'secrets' for research on the same topic; however, the book is a disappointment.

Written to be a 'shocker' of sorts. It's okay, but didn't give any insights, I was searching for a character I'm piecing together in my book.

The First "How To Manual" for Sex Workers

While the topic of this book may seem a bit unusual, Greenery Press has always published books that catered to an alternative audience and broke ground in formerly uncharted areas. This book is no exception. Magdelene Meretrix has written what could be called the "first sex workers' guide." Ms. Meretrix has worked in a number of different areas in the so-called sex industry, from working in "live girl booths," phone sex, a "stripper," and even had a brief role in an adult film. Drawing on her experiences and those of other women in various parts of the sex worker industry, she gives practical advice about getting a job as an escort, an exotic dancer, phone sex, what things are like in the legal Nevada brothels, the adult film industry, and even "Pro Domme" work. While she cautions against anyone doing anything illegal, the information she relays in all cases is excellent. There's also a great chapter on what to do if you get arrested. Each chapter also features web sites to go to get more information about a specific topic
While I'm certainly not planning on getting a job as a "sex worker," the book was enlightening as to what this "world" entails. While in college in the late 1970s, I took a Human Sexuality class and wrote a term paper on prostitution. It's intriguing to me to see how much about "the world's oldest profession" has changed and how much seems to have stayed the same.
While most would look down at sex work as a career or even a respectable job, to paraphrase a famous quote, "anything worth doing is worth doing well." Kudos to Ms. Meretrix for writing a fascinating book about a topic most look down upon.

Good starting point

In 16 chapters, this book, the first I could find on becoming a female sex worker in the United States, Meretrix covers a lot of different types of work from her own personal experiences. While she covers many topics ranging from disease, to burnout, to maintaining clients, a good deal of this book is rather vague. More details were needed in several areas but it is a good first attempt at such a how-to book. The types of sex work discussed focus on those that use your body (pictures, street walking, dancing, etc) or your voice (phone sex) but not producers of the written word or those who take pictures -- aren't they all involved in sex work too? Please be aware of your state's laws before ordering this book or enacting any of the advice in this book. Note that I suspect the name is created specifically for sex work -- Meretrix is a Latin term for female harlot.
