Europe's Alliance with Israel: Aiding the Occupation, by David Cronin

In carefully crafted official statements, the European Union presents itself as an honest broker in the Middle East. In reality, however, the EU’s 27 governments have been engaged in a long process of accommodating Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.

Journalist David Cronin interrogates the relationship and its outcomes. A recent agreement for 'more intense, more fruitful, more influential co-operation' between the EU and Israel has meant that Israel has become a member state of the Union in all but name. Cronin shows that rather than using this relationship to encourage Israeli restraint, the EU has legitimised actions such as the ill-treatment of prisoners and the Gaza invasion.

Concluding his revealing and shocking account, Cronin calls for a continuation and deepening of international activism and protest to halt the EU's slide into complicity.

Review
It seems to many that Israel is above international law. This important book explores the complex political ties that have prevented European countries from holding Israel to account. It is essential reading for all who care about justice and the rule of law. I hope David Cronin is prepared for the abuse he and his book will incur. All the more reason to buy it, read it and take the discussion forward. -- Ken Loach

Illuminating study of the EU's complicity in Israel's crimes
By William Podmore
Journalist David Cronin has written a most useful book on the EU's complicity with Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories.

The EU has an association agreement with Israel, giving it trade preferences, and is aiming for `more intense, more fruitful, more influential co-operation'. It is a member of the EU in all but name.

As Javier Solana, then EU foreign policy chief, said in 2009, "Israel, allow me to say, is a member of the European Union without being a member of the institutions. It's a member of all the programmes, it participates in all the programmes."

The UN estimates that half of all foreign aid to Palestinians ends up aiding Israeli companies. The European Commission pays these companies to provide goods and services to Gaza. The other half goes to rebuilding aid projects that the Israelis have destroyed. Between 2001 and 2009, Israeli attacks on occupied territories inflicted 55 million euros' worth of damage on EU-funded infrastructure.

Israel's attack on Gaza (December 2008-January 2009) killed 1,417 Palestinians, including 926 civilians: 497 men, 116 women and 313 children. 10 Israeli soldiers were killed and three civilians. The day after the attack ended, presidents and prime ministers from Britain, Italy, Germany, France, Spain and the Czech Republic attended a gala dinner in Jerusalem hosted by Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert. As an Israeli official boasted to the Jerusalem Post, "Six world leaders dropped everything to come here and express their support for Israel's security."

Israel, backed by the EU, punished Gaza for its democratic election of Hamas. Israel's brutal blockade has turned Gaza into the world's largest open-air prison.

The EU appointed as its `peace envoy' to the Middle East Anthony Blair, who backed Israel's attacks on Lebanon and Gaza. He gets £400,000 a year and has taken an entire floor of the poshest hotel in East Jerusalem - cost, more than $1 million a year. The whole EU is in the Blair pose - pretending to be an honest, even-handed broker of peace, in fact being an accomplice in illegal occupation and aggressions.

There is a well-known pro-Israel lobby in the USA (see The Israel lobby and US foreign policy, by John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt). The EU has a pro-Israel lobby too, including the European Friends of Israel (based on a cross-party alliance of MEPs), the Transatlantic Institute, B'nai B'rith and the European Jewish Congress.

In Britain, there are also the British Israel Communication and Research Centre and the Jewish National Fund UK, a charity which calls itself `proudly Zionist', yet of course `entirely non-political'. The JNF is an openly racist body: it is now illegal for any land it holds to be sold to any Palestinian. Blair and Gordon Brown are honorary patrons of JNF UK.

Israel and its lobby bay for war on Iran, a country which has not invaded any country for centuries, unlike, say, Israel.

This Alliance must be cancelled
By Dr. Ludwig Watzal
The United States of America sees itself as an honest broker in the Israel-Palestine conflict. This self-perception could not be further away from the truth. What about the European Union (EU) and its role in the Middle East? Is the EU an honest broker when it comes to Israel's occupation of Palestinian land?

David Cronin, a journalist specializing in European politics, demonstrates in his book that the EU over the years has been accommodating to Israel's illegal occupation. Despite its anti-occupation rhetoric, the EU is, unnoticed by the public, sliding into complicity, writes the author. The EU wears the regard of human rights and the respect of international law like a monstrance in the relationships with other countries, but closes both eyes when it comes to Israel's disregard of both. In his words: "The European Union's cowardice towards Israel is in stark contrast to the robust position it has taken when major atrocities have occurred in other conflicts."

Cronin writes that Europe`s "unholy alliance" with Israel has been forged partly as a result of 9/11. Both singled out Islamic militancy as the common enemy and started fighting against the symptoms. Although, Israel is not a formal member of the EU, in reality however, it is treated like a member state. When Javier Solana, then EU's foreign policy chief, visited Jerusalem in 2009 he admitted that Israel is much closer to the EU than Croatia. "There is no country outside the European continent that has this type of relationship that Israel has with the European Union. Israel, allow me to say, is a member of the European Union without being a member of the institutions. It's a member of all the programmes, it participates in all the programmes." The EU speaks continuously of its close attachment to human rights, but its "alliance with Israel is largely devoid of ethical integrity".

The nagging fact that Israel is illegally occupying land of another people is dealt with inconsistently. The double standards pervade not only US-American foreign policy but also that of the European Union. Israel refuses not only inspections of its large nuclear arsenals, but is the only country in the Middle East that refuses to sign up to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Besides that it has a huge stockpile of biological weapons. Together with Syria, North Korea Israel has not ratified the treaty, which bans these weapons.

That Israel could successfully insinuate itself into the EU is attributed by the author to Israel's charm offensive, its impressive performance in science and technology, and from the massive support it has obtained from Nicolas Sarkozy and other European heads of states, such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel. It is no exaggeration to say that the EU is abetting crimes against humanity in the Middle East. To end this complicity will not be easy. According to David Cronin, the first step to dissolve this "unholy alliance" is to know how it was built.

Even after the Gaza massacre in 2008/09 on a helpless and imprisoned civilian population, the EU took sides with Israel and put the sole blame on Hamas. The German chancellor took the bun by declaring that Hamas "clearly and exclusively" bore responsibility for the attacks, writes the author. Unsurprisingly, the EU considers Hamas a "terror organization" as requested to do by Israel and the US. Cronin and many other experts regard Hamas as a resistance movement against Israeli occupation. Without Israeli occupation there would be no Hamas and also no Hizb`allah in Lebanon. In their Middle Eastern policy, the EU elaborates on the symptoms and not the causes. The EU treats Israel like a kind of a Middle Eastern Canada. Israel might be all of that, but it is still an occupying power with a very poor human rights record and it violates numerous international treaties. "Yet instead of treating it as a rogue, Europe has decided to reward it", writes Cronin.

David Cronin sums up his book with an outlook of the establishment of an "Israel Lobby" in Brussels. On the European level, the pro-Israel lobby is by far not yet so well organized as in the United States. Over the years it has, nevertheless, grown in both size and strength, "a phenomenon that has gone unnoticed by most of the mainstream media". The different Israel lobby groups in Brussels are "European Friends of Israel", "Transatlantic Institute", set up by the American Jewish Committee (AJC), "B'Nai B'rith", and "European Jewish Congress (EJC). These lobby organizations have strong links to the nationally based Israel lobbies in the European capitals. The strongest "Israel Lobbies" are found in France and Great Britain. These lobbies have only received scant attention from the mainstream media, "because journalists and editors work within a culture of censorship", writes Cronin. "Most of this censorship is self-censorship motivated by fear that newspapers which criticize the pro-Israel lobby will be branded anti-Semitic." In general terms, the author's findings and conclusions about Israel lobbies in Europe hold also true for Germany.

The book offers deep insights into the Middle East policy of the EU, which the author regards as scandalous, because the EU - when it comes to Israel - violates its own basic values of promoting human rights, freedom, democracy and international law. It seems as if the complexity of the EU and its diversity of political interests have been responsible for its blurred stance towards Israel's violation of human rights and international law. If this development is not arrested by political decision-makers who possess a clear vision of justice and the rule of law in international relations, the EU will end up being as dominated by political interest groups like the US government. This would not be in the best interests of the world's peoples in general, and the Israeli and Palestinian people in particular. As long as Israel occupies foreign land, the EU should terminate all cooperation with this country. According to the "values" of the EU, a support of an occupying regime is impossible.

Alone: Orphaned on the Ocean, by Richard D. Logan PhD, Tere Duperrault Fassbender

Terry Jo Duperrault was 11 when her family was murdered at sea aboard a chartered sailboat off the coast of Florida. She jumped overboard just in time to escape. Surviving four days on a cork float in the middle of the ocean, Terry Jo's rescue pictures graced LIFE Magazine soon after she was found. This is the first time Terry Jo, now known as Tere Duperrault Fassbender, has been able to fully tell her story. In September 1988 Oprah Winfrey reunited her with the freighter Captain who saved her, but even then, she was not healed enough to reveal what it took to survive for four days adrift and alone at sea. Co-authored by psychologist and survival expert Richard Logan, readers delve into the details of how a little girl survived the murder of her family; the gradual collapse of the small cork float she used to keep afloat while guarded by a pod of whales; and the aftermath and the reclamation of life. Alone: Orphaned on the Ocean is the ultimate inspirational tale of good.

Do not overlook this book!
By Elaine Lowell
Having read a brief reference to this 1961 tragedy, and the subsequent book, I followed through with Kindle/Amazon to consider purchasing it. Although it received 4 out of 5 stars, many reviewers critiqued the authors' rendition as "boring". DEFINITELY NOT TRUE! It is very well-written. The details and atmosphere bring the reader immediately and intimately into this 11-year old girl's horrific experience, her incredible survival and the repercussions on her life and the lives of others. Also intriguing, is the follow-up on the personality of the perpetrator and the personal disintegration that brought him to his final end. A wonderful, can't-put-down read!

Rainbows End, by Vernor Vinge

Four time Hugo Award winner Vernor Vinge has taken readers to the depths of space and into the far future in his bestselling novels A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky. Now, he has written a science-fiction thriller set in a place and time as exciting and strange as any far-future world: San Diego, California, 2025.

Robert Gu is a recovering Alzheimer's patient. The world that he remembers was much as we know it today. Now, as he regains his faculties through a cure developed during the years of his near-fatal decline, he discovers that the world has changed and so has his place in it. He was a world-renowned poet. Now he is seventy-five years old, though by a medical miracle he looks much younger, and he's starting over, for the first time unsure of his poetic gifts. Living with his son's family, he has no choice but to learn how to cope with a new information age in which the virtual and the real are a seamless continuum, layers of reality built on digital views seen by a single person or millions, depending on your choice. But the consensus reality of the digital world is available only if, like his thirteen-year-old granddaughter Miri, you know how to wear your wireless access—through nodes designed into smart clothes—and to see the digital context—through smart contact lenses.

With knowledge comes risk. When Robert begins to re-train at Fairmont High, learning with other older people what is second nature to Miri and other teens at school, he unwittingly becomes part of a wide-ranging conspiracy to use technology as a tool for world domination.

In a world where every computer chip has Homeland Security built-in, this conspiracy is something that baffles even the most sophisticated security analysts, including Robert's son and daughter-in law, two top people in the U.S. military. And even Miri, in her attempts to protect her grandfather, may be entangled in the plot.

As Robert becomes more deeply involved in conspiracy, he is shocked to learn of a radical change planned for the UCSD Geisel Library; all the books there, and worldwide, would cease to physically exist. He and his fellow re-trainees feel compelled to join protests against the change. With forces around the world converging on San Diego, both the conspiracy and the protest climax in a spectacular moment as unique and satisfying as it is unexpected. This is science fiction at its very best, by a master storyteller at his peak.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in San Diego, Calif., this hard SF novel from Hugo-winner Vinge (A Deepness in the Sky) offers dazzling computer technology but lacks dramatic tension. Circa 2025, people use high-tech contact lenses to interface with computers in their clothes. "Silent messaging" is so automatic that it feels like telepathy. Robert Gu, a talented Chinese-American poet, has missed much of this revolution due to Alzheimer's, but now the wonders of modern medicine have rehabilitated his mind. Installed in remedial classes at the local high school, he tries to adjust to this brave new world, but soon finds himself enmeshed in a somewhat quixotic plot by elderly former University of California–San Diego faculty members to protest the destruction of the university library, now rendered superfluous by the ubiquitous online databanks. Unbeknownst to Robert, he's also a pawn in a dark international conspiracy to perfect a deadly biological weapon. The true nature of the superweapon is never made entirely clear, and too much of the book feels like a textbook introduction to Vinge's near-future world. (May)

From Bookmarks Magazine
A multiple Hugo Award?winning author (A Fire Upon the Deep; A Deepness in the Sky) and former professor of mathematics at San Diego State University, Vernor Vinge writes as if he's spent some time in 2025. This novel's setting, contemporary with the author's Fast Times at Fairmont High, is one of instantaneous technology where accomplished hackers wield profound influence. Reviewers applaud Vinge's avoidance of science-fiction traps like information dumps and rootless "techno-bedazzlement" in favor of emotional storylines and plausible—and sometimes frightening—insights into where technology is moving humanity.

From Booklist
In the near future, the European Center for Defense against Disease discovers a diabolical pseudomimivirus. Rather than set off a panic, secret agents of the EU, Japan, and India work clandestinely to uncover a conspiracy seemingly based in a San Diego lab. Former poet Robert Gu, a recovering Alzheimer's patient (one of the lucky few who took to all the treatments), returns to school just as agents Braun, Vaz, and Mitsuri put their wheels in motion. Immensely frustrated by simultaneously living with his son's family and completely reeducating himself, Gu becomes a perfect dupe for the hacker hired by the gang of spooks. Under cover of a library protest, Gu and some old friends get into the lab, trailed by one of Gu's adolescent classmates and his granddaughter. The conspiracy runs deep and has some terrifying implications on account of YGBM (you gotta believe me) technology, regardless of the conspirators' intentions. The near future is less alien here than in some of Vinge's other work, but no less fascinating and well constructed. Regina Schroeder

Fascinating, but ultimately disappointing.
By Michael A. Kalm
Vernor Vinge has always astounded with his amazing imagination, and connection with real, or at least possible science. In this book, he imagines us, in the very near future, extrapolating our path toward ever increased connectedness through the internet. Some of it is difficult reading, only because his acronyms are sometimes so abstruse, they leave one guessing.
His character development is very good, so good, that it makes more palpable my disappointment with the books ending. He leaves information regarding some of the main characters in the story totally unresolved. There is a randomness to it. One longs for a sequel, but there wasn't any.

A disappointment, but only by comparison
By Jonathan Golding
Perhaps I came to this novel with expectations set too high. I recently discovered Vernor Vinge and devoured a Deepness in the Sky and A Fire Upon the Deep, both of which I highly recommend and will probably read again several times. So learning that Vinge had written something dealing with events closer to our time intrigued me, and I launched into Rainbows End ready to be amazed.

This is a good book in many ways, but in comparison with Vinge's other work I found myself disappointed. It is set in the near future and concerns the efforts of an aged poet whose Alzheimer's has just been cured to reintegrate himself into this brave new world. Along the way he becomes an unwitting pawn in a plot by malevolent forces attempting to manipulate public opinion by means of technology.

Some of this works on the level of a dramatized extrapolation of where computing might go in the next few decades. Robert Gu, however, is an unlikeable character, spiteful, manipulalative, and bitter at the world. He is a well drawn and I found the sections of the book exploring him and his eventual "redemption" interesting if unpleasant.

My problem with the book is that it seemed to try to be several different novels at once and that the parts did not fit together terribly well. As I said earlier one aspect of the book is a look at where the information age is going. Vinge taught computer science near where I live for many years and I found the "prediction" aspect intriguing. The super thriller spy plot involving mind control technology could have been interesting if it had been better explored, and if the other aspects of the book hadn't gotten in the way. However, we get very little information to whet our dread as to what might happen should our hero's fail.

But I suppose in a way my biggest disappointment involves the villain. The "bad guy" Alfred Vaz is trying to control the world in order to protect us all. Yet we never really find out anything about him. This struck me as a tremendous missed story opportunity. Most "evil" people believe or have convinced themselves they are acting for the greater good. A story about a good man committing evil acts for what he believes are valid reasons might have been interesting. Especially if we had gotten to know some of the events that shaped him and how he thinks. Instead he is a complete non-entity as far as the story is concerned. In comparison with the Machiavellian manipulations of a Thomas Nau or Lord Steel this aspect of the story is weak.

Overall I liked this book, but found it disappointing in comparison with Vinge's other work.

Still one of the best SF novels of all time!
By Michael Deering
Still one of the best SF novels of all time! It shows a world in which everyone perceives the world through the filter of 3D contact lens displays 10 years before everyone else got the idea! But there is a great story here too, with interesting (slightly damaged) characters, and numerous sub-plots.

Hunted, by Karen Robards

"'Twas the night before Christmas" . . . and dozens of rich, influential hostages are trapped inside a sprawling lakefront mansion in New Orleans. The perp? Detective Reed Ware, model cop turned outlaw. Reed's out for truth, and will stop at nothing to get it--including waging a coup among the city's most elite, including the mayor, the council chairman, the sheriff, and the superintendent of police . . . who just happens to be hostage negotiator Caroline Wallace's father.
Cool, calm, controlled. That's Caroline's reputation. But when Reed, looking even hotter than he did years ago when seventeen-year-old Caroline tried to seduce him, becomes her next case, she's swept up by their still-sizzling tension.
Nothing about tonight is what it seems, and it's up to Caroline to put the pieces together--if she can think fast enough over the pounding of her heart. But the harder Caroline tries to do her job, the more she begins to wonder whose side she's really on.

In Hunted by Karen Robards, Reed is a homocide detective in New Orleans. Having lost his ex-wife and young son in an accident 3 years ago, Reed has been living to work. But he is getting tired of it, tired of all the killing and badness. Holly and Ant are two young teen boys he has come to know through work and has befriended, trying to help after they lost their mother to murder. With Holly determined to find the people responsible for his mother's death, Reed becomes entrenched in a graveyard of gang related killings. But does the murder stop with the gangs? Or is there more going on than anyone would want someone like Reed to find out?

To get to the truth that no one wants him to know, to save Holly and Ant, Reed ends up doing what he never thought he'd be doing and suddenly it's his life in danger too and him who is on the run. With his past being used against him, is there anyone Reed can trust to help him uncover the truth? Or is his life as he's known it over now?

Caroline might just be that one person. A person from his long ago past that he knew when she was a teenager, Caroline is now a Jefferson Parish police sergeant and a hostage negotiator. When she is called out on Christmas Eve to a mansion where some of Jefferson Parish's top brass are being held hostage, she is shocked to discover not only is one of the hostages her father, but the hostage taker is Reed. When Reed manages to escape, taking Holly and Caroline with him, Caroline soon begins to realize there is a lot more to the story than Reed is telling her...and she soon begins to realize she really does want to help him. Just being with him has put her in danger now too...and Reed is going to have to trust someone to help him. For someone who trust's no one, it will be a big step for Reed to trust Caroline, but it might be one he has to take, even if there is far more going on than Caroline can imagine. Their lives, as well as Holly and Ant's may depend on it. Will they be able to find out the truth and the who before someone silences them forever?

The attraction Reed and Caroline feel towards each other further adds intensity to the plot of Hunted...is it true attraction or part of the chase?

I have been waiting so eagerly for Hunted by Karen Robards and she does not disappoint!! Hunted will have you on the edge of your seat as Karen takes us on a fast paced, thrilling adventure! Caroline and Reed are both strong, stubborn characters who have the potential to work very well together if they can get to that. They have a lot in common, they both have pasts they have struggled through, but they have both become honorable people I'd love to meet up with! It's always disturbing to read about corruption in law enforcement and from the side Karen tells it from, she makes the Hunted very realistic and you will find yourself thinking that could actually happen.

Hunted takes place over a very short time period, but Karen still manages to draw from Reed and Caroline's pasts and presents so that you get a very good understanding of them as people. I felt I got great background on them through out Hunted that added strength to who Reed and Caroline are today and their actions. When you read Hunted you will never be bored, you won't be able to put it down! The heat Reed and Caroline can create between the two of them, and the way they try to deny it adds some great romance to a powerful suspense. I couldn't wait to see if they would have the chance to be together.

I loved Karen's setting for Hunted, her descriptions of New Orleans and the bayou will take you there!

Hunted is a suspenseful mystery with a lot of heat between two characters fighting for what's right. I would highly recommend Hunted to any romantic suspense reader...brace yourself!

Not her best work
By Sandra Myers
I think I've read everything Karen Robards has ever written and this book was the most disappointing. There was a lot of sexual tension but not much story. It's a shame because this had a good plot and could have been a good novel. I'll wait for her next book and hope that it's better.

Disappointed
By Margaret A. Wilks
Karen Robards has written books I have loved, but this isn't one of them. The story could have been quite good, but there were endless pages describing amorous cops who acted like 16 year olds and it, quite frankly, got old. (He's so hot! She's so sexy! Never! Maybe? No! Yes! Mistake! But...) I had to make myself finish the book. It was a shame because the story had potential.
