Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp is the second popular novel from American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was first published in two volumes by Phillips, Sampson and Company in 1856. Although it enjoyed better initial sales than her previous, and more famous, novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, it was ultimately less popular. Dred, the titular character, is one of the Great Dismal Swamp maroons, escaped slaves living in the Great Dismal Swamp, preaching angry and violent retribution for the evils of slavery and rescuing escapees from the dog of the slavecatchers. The response to Stowe's first work greatly impacted her second anti-slavery novel. Uncle Tom's Cabin drew criticism from abolitionists and African-American authors for the passive martyrdom of Uncle Tom and endorsement of colonization as the solution to slavery. Dred, by contrast, introduces a black revolutionary character who is presented as an heir to the American revolution rather than a problem to be expatriated. Dred can thus be placed within an African-American literary tradition as well as a political revision of the sentimental novel (see David Walker's Appeal (1829) and Frederick Douglass's The Heroic Slave (1852)). The novel is also interesting in the historical context of runaway slave communities surviving for a long time in swamp areas. Swamps were places where runaway slaves could hide, and therefore became a taboo subject, particularly in the south. The best hiding places were found on high ground in swampy areas.

This book published in 1856 has been reformatted for the KIndle and may contain an occasional defect from the original publication or from the reformatting.

Amazing History

The study of any nation or people is fascinating but history of The United States is truly amazing. Incredibly we still exist as a nation with state's rights and human rights. After reading this graphic book written during the worst time in our history, I am filled with a deep sadness.

Most amazing music book EVER

I own literally hundreds of music books on banjo, guitar, harmonica, piano,
you name it.
I have NEVER come across anything like this.
You pop in the DVD and here's Dick Hyman playing and talking non-stop for 2 hours in awesome audio and video.
But here's the kicker: Every word he says and every note he plays is transcribed PRECISELY in the book!

The material is jumpin' jazz: phenomenal and historically significant.

Dick played at Birdland with Lester Young, scored films for Woody Allen, and arranged for Count Basie, Doc Serverinsen and NBC TV.

Bobbing your head back and forth from screen to book
will give you a cozmic buzz.

A great history lesson and great lessons/learning materials.

This book and DVD are a treasure for anyone interested in ragtime, stride, and jazz piano styles. The author demonstrates analyzes and deconstructs the devices and techniques of many of the great jazz pianists as well as the history and evolution of piano styles in general. Everything he shows you on the dvd is also transcribed in the book. For a beginner you could watch this a few times just to see the landscape of what is possible and what has been done before and intermediate to advanced players can pick up lots of good technique tips. The 2 hour dvd alone would be worth the price of admission but having the transcriptions along with the dvd really makes this a great value. The author is an amazing piano player in his own right. Highly recommended. Like the other reviewer I own a lot of piano learning material and this package stands out as a real gem.

It is like taking master classes with Dick Hyman on the development ...

This is an extraordinary work. It is like taking master classes with Dick Hyman on the development of jazz piano. You get examples of multiple piano styles and Dick’s comments (often humorous) on them. I learned from just watching him attack the keys. The work is transcribed completely, and often has fingering for playing fast runs. This work is so unusual and good that it could be a model for teaching other subjects. This book is not for beginners, but it would make a good gift for a teenager who was an intermediate to advanced pianist, because it shows what can be done with various styles of piano playing.

Note to the author: Dick, I know that this might be a bit tame for you, but would you create a similar book on cocktail piano in the same style, giving your thoughts, how you think about playing technique, about chord substitutions, etc.? That would be another wonderful work. Thank you for sharing your expertise.

Worth much more than it cost.

Four hundred large, thick pages with wonderful images depicting light. I wasn't sure that I would like it, but I DO. Very Much. There is a great deal of magic in these pages. Often there are a few words from the photographer or the writer about why and how and always there is thought and information about the subject matter. The book inspires - I feel privileged to own this book.

3.5 stars - Needed a bit more of the friendship in this friends to lovers story

I have a thing for friends to lovers but I didn't get to see enough of the friend part and while the bulk of the story was sexing there wasn't the satisfying first hook up that I wanted -the one where they are both so happy to finally have taken that next step with the one they've secretly loved - instead there's bondage and making each other beg.

And this is one of those frustrating ones where there is all this counterproductive mental chatter and you just want them to actually tell the other what they want and how they really feel.

A friends to lovers story with so much heart. Ryan and Annie are best friends, determined to keep it that way. When Annie decides she needs to make herself over she shakes up their relationship too. Which might be just what they needed.

I felt a lot of emotion with this story. Ryan and Annie are friends who have loved each other for a long time. It is so hot to see their friendship evolve in to much more. They are explosive together. Nice to see the others in this Bedding the Bachelor series find their lovers. Can't wait for Coles story!

A Great Read, Until the End.

As I began reading this book, I was immediately immersed in the world of North & South. I loved the concept and found the book to be a very easy and fast read. I could not put it down.
I began to get concerned as I got toward the end of the book. Several key plots in the story still had no resolution and I was getting dangerously close to the end. In contrast, the author added even more plots to the story line which each page turn. As I continued to read I was shocked when I got to the last page. I truthfully thought I advanced to the end in error. To my disappointment, it was the end. I was so annoyed by it that I stayed up half the night thinking of all the plot holes.
Why on earth would the author introduce plots that had no resolution? Of course reading in the author’s note tucked away is an indication of a sequel… but seriously?
I understand leaving a cliffhanger for an audience but small plot lines were left unaddressed with no resolution as well. As not to spoil the story for future readers, I’m purposely omitting them.
All in all, the book was an excellent read with the exception of the end when the story literally stops cold. To be drawn in and let down in such a way is truthfully a complete and total disappointment.

A Pleasure to Read

Okay, I'm a bit surprised that I gave this book five stars, but I enjoyed it so much. I wasn't sure if I would like the writing style of this book as I read the first two chapters, however the book just got better and better as it went along. I couldn't put it down. I've read a significant amount of North and South fan fiction, and I would consider this one of my favorites. I liked how the modern day Margaret Bryce bought an openness to the character, instead of the constant repression of feelings and emotion of the Victorian Margaret Hale. However the modern Margaret resembled the Victorian Margaret in so many ways, I didn't feel like I was reading about an entirely new heroine. The plot differs dramatically from the original, but I feel the author has tapped into the true essence of North and South. The intensity of Margaret and John's feelings was so lovely to read about. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

Don't let the "time-travel" discourage you from this great romance

A wonderful exploration of a relationship between strange bedfellows. His power and magnetism are met by her true intelligence and perceived impertinence. The attraction is immediate and palpable. The creative backstory is excellent , even for a reader who generally shies far away from any story promoting time travel. This one roped me in and kept me mesmerized throughout. The writing is a pleasure; the romance as well. Love scenes should be acceptable by most standards though they exist. Spoiler: There is a consummation scene. Not to be missed: the bathroom banter is precious. (You have to read it to understand I'm not talking of anything nasty) If there had been just a bit more to the ending which felt rushed, this would have been a STRONG five star book. I loved it. A sequel is planned. I hope so, as that will be a guaranteed read for me.
