Old, but read over and over and...

Everyone always said that Johnny Harris was headed for nowhere, and their predictions were confirmed when this rebel was put in jail for killing his girlfriend.
Only Rachel Grant, his English teacher, believed that he was innocent. When her former student was put on parole, he came back to their small town to accept the job Rachel offers him in her family's hardware store.
As Rachel expects, Johnny creates quite a stir in town. What she does not expect is that he just isn't a boy anymore, but a man she is attracted to.
Like everyone else who's written reviews, I find that Johnny Harris is the BEST hero I have ever read about in a romance novel. I find myself reading this book over and over. Rachel Grant isn't so bad herself, and her actions are usually believable and real.
Although this book seems to have less going for it in the mystery department, it's still a good book and worth buying.

This was a twist- Younger guy / Older Woman...

I am slowly going through KR's books and this is one of her older ones- but it was worth reading! It kind of reminded me of LaVyrle Spencer's books (she's great if you haven't discovered her yet). The chemistry between Johnny and Rachel was great- made for a good story!
Johnny Harris is from the "other side of the tracks." Everyone said he was trouble just because of his last name was Harris- but it was "proven" when he was sent to prison for the murder of his girlfriend. Now 11 years later he is placed parole and granted a job in the town's local hardware store due to the grace of Rachel Grant, his "old" English teacher from high school. (She always did doubt his being guilty of murder.)
Boy, does Johnny cause a stir in the town when he arrives and it doesn't help his having a "bad-boy" attitude. Rachel is constantly getting him out of scrapes. But he starts revealing his hurt to her, allowing her a look within his heart- while he also reveals the feelings he has always had for her going back to when she taught him in high school. He is no longer the fine lookin' "bad-boy" in school, but is now the strikingly handsome man from prison and, remember, there is a 5 year age difference but does that really matter now? And he sure isn't what Rachel would have considered "her type" of man but what about those feelings Johnny is now making her acknowledge as having?
Then another murder takes place- eleven years later with all of the same familiarities of the first one. How is Johnny connected to it? It gets very unrealistic towards the end- hey, it makes for a good story... I would definitely rate this one as being an "oldie but goodie!"

Sizzling tale of second chances

High school teacher Rachel Grant gets more than she bargained for when a former student is about to be paroled for the murder of the town's golden girl and turns to her for help getting his life back. Getting him a job and an apartment are the least she can do, since she is convinced that he was innocent. No one is more surprised than Rachel when she picks him up and instead of coming face to face with a gawky teen; a sexy alpha man is waiting for her. As Johnny fights for his right to return to his hometown, and the town heavies try to make his life miserable to drive him out, Rachel finds herself attracted to him, and acting on that passion sends them both on a collision course with the real culprit behind the slayings. When another former lover turns up dead, Johnny is the only suspect, but this time Rachel is his alibi.

Much is made about the teacher-student romance, but the age gap is a mere five years (and the romance did not start until both were adults). And do they ever sizzle. But the story is also sensitive, particularly in the dramatization of Johnny's fractured home life. The two make a striking duo, and their story will capture the reader's attention. Despite numerous red herrings and possible suspects, the revelation of the killer was truly implausible and felt like Robards would do anything to keep the culprit a surprise. My first Robards novel, I periodically return to the sizzling story again and again, making Robards an automatic purchase for me.

Great Illustrations and Precise Instructions

My gosh! This book is amazing, but is not for the faint of heart. If you are an occassional fixer uper who changes his/her own oil and maybe some spark plugs or brakes, this book is NOT for you. However, if you are delving into engine building and specs, this book is a great source book to keep on the shelf for referencing. It'll remind you of precise measurements and tools to use in particular circumstances while blueprinting an engine. The book also discusses what true blueprinting is vs. the generic "blueprinting" vocabulary that is loosely thrown out there by many mechanics.

It's a great teaching tool for those just starting engine blueprinting and an excellent resource for those professional blueprinters as well. Well worth the purchase. The book is all about precision, precision, precision of ALL engine parts! Great illustrations too!

Again, just as a reminder, this book is for those into building engines to precise measurements. This practice involves lots of financial resources and instruments. If you are not already into blueprinting or planning on it, then this book is not for you. The reading level of this informational text is very advanced, but is awesome if you understand the lingo in the art of blueprinting.

Another great book from Car Tech. Informative and entertaining, every part is analyzed for function and techniques used to optimize it for better performance. Even push rods need special attention, who'd a thunk it. Weather you are building a killer race engine or the ultimate street machine, this book is a must use referance. And if you are a gear head who wants to better understand what goes on behind the scenes, why do succesful engine builders get the big bucks and are held in such high esteem; this book is for you. I have always had a strong interest in Cars and Engines. Whereas I have rebuilt an engine or two, I have never Blueprinted one..... this book gives you the written tools to do so and I would feel very confident following the instructions and using the great illustrations to complete such a project. Mike Mavrigian has done a wonderful job and CarTech has once again given us a great book to add to our Auto Libraries. Anyone thinking about Engine Blueprinting should have this book.

Good book for those who don't read music

If you are new to guitar, and don't know how to read music, this book is for you. It is straightforward, and simple using the tablature method rather than standard music theory-which will give you a basic start on beginning to understand reading music and music theory later on if you choose. By taking some time doing the exercises, I was strumming away faster than I thought and have also learned that their are a number of music sheet books with tab measures which can let you go on beyond this book and play a lot of different forms of music. It is geared toward the absolute beginner, and is not overwhelming. I can say that it has helped me, but like anything else it does take practice.

Great Basic Teaching Guide

Dave Brewster has put together an easy to use guide for individual learning and small group instruction. The diagrams are easy to read and explain even in a bilingual English/Spanish situation. This book gives a thorough orientation to acoustic & electric guitars and teaches the basics for tuning, playing chords, strumming patterns and some notation reading. I appreciate the teaching of relative tuning for times when an electronic tuner is not available.

More Kindle shovelware

The stories are great (I first bought this in paperback over 30 years ago) but, as is often the case with older books newly released on Kindle, the proofreading and format checking seem not to extend beyond the free sample; extra/missing line breaks, extra hyphens, and uncorrected OCR errors are jarring. One essay alone ("The Theory and Practice of Teleportation") has "denned" for "defined"; "Alfred Hester" for "Alfred Bester"; "Foul" for "Poul" (as in Anderson); and others. If Sheckley hadn't already taken it, a better title would be "Untouched by Human Hands".

What a disappointment after such a wait. (In the desktop Kindle app, the book is displayed in sans-serif fonts, making every page an eyesore. Fortunately the Kindle devices seem to ignore this "feature.")

The book is actually pretty good,

though I can't answer for the readability of the kindle version that Perldiver read. As a book its definitely worth reading. Stories are OK, but the essays on time travel, teleportation, and the possibility of preserving a certain Kryptonian life form are very funny and definitely first rate.

A nice collection of older Niven short stories. Not necessarily his best work but still very good. "Inconstant Moon" starts out great but then veers away from the expected conclusion to one which is less dramatic. I thought "Passerby" was touching.

A Unique Way of Describing New World Imperialism

Author Patricia Seed takes a unique approach to describing the 16th-17th C imperialism by the five major European powers in the New World (English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Dutch). Rather than rehash the conquests of these powers, Seed discusses HOW these groups 'took possession' of the Americas. Each country saw their ritual or ceremony as the only valid way to establish control of an area. The English built a fence or planted a hedge on their 'plantations' to show ownership; the Spanish read a declaration of war (The Requirement), based on the Islamic principal of jihad (dervied from the Muslim occupation of Medieval Spain); the French relied on "conquest by love", a ceremony designed to show Native compliance with French rule; the Portuguese and Dutch used mathematical calculations and cartography to show how their "discoveries" of unknown areas established dominion.

Seed presents extensive documentation of her ideas; at times, one could argue, a little too much repetition of similar information to prove her point. Rather than a chronological narrative, the chapters don't seem to follow a straight line; for example, the first chapter deals with the English (rather late arrivals to the Americas, as opposed to the Spanish and Portuguese). Perhaps not a big deal, but the transitions from country to country were sometimes choppy. This is a good book for those already familiar with the basics of the European exploration and conquest of the Americas, and Seed makes some excellent connections between the Roman/Medieval world and the early modern world, specifically the ethnocentrism of each country and its 'right' to dominate others.

New Way to Look at New World

This was a very well researched and scholarly book. (Perhaps a thesis) A bit of an effort but an interesting review of the different European powers and their takeover of the new world. I had never thought about the English love of fences, the French love of acceptance, the Spanish love of ritual and the Portugeuse love of the technology of exploration in ways that reflected how they staked out their claims. It was a new level of perspective.

This book is short, but leaves you wanting more while also giving you other sites to explore. The author isn't writing a novel, but succinctly describes the power exchange that happened with her husband. She makes it easier to accept and enjoy this kink for both partners.
