For innovation to occur leadership has to be collective. To create a momentum for innovation in their company, leaders from different functions need to team up, to build innovation networks. It can be developed within an appropriate company culture through careful leadership development, typically achieved through career management and coaching. Innovation leaders also need to stay on board and it is the responsibility of the top management team to create an attractive climate to develop and keep its innovation leaders.

There are plenty of books that deal with innovation, or with new product development, or with leadership; this is different in its focus on the specifics of innovation leadership – that particular form of leadership that stimulates and sustains innovation.

This book maps the broad territory of innovation leadership and contributes new thinking on the focus of the emerging leadership role of the CTO; distinction between ‘front end’ and ‘back end’ innovation leaders; the concept of aligning leadership styles with strategy; and the chain of leadership concept.

Combining practice-based and empirical research-based observations with simple conceptual frameworks, illustrated by many company examples and case stories from a broad range of industries in the US and Europe, this is a systematic presentation of innovation drivers and their implications in terms of what leaders need to do to make it work.

Review
"...provides a structure and framework for innovation management...taking a pragmatic approach to the subject and a realistic view on leadership." (Gulf Business, October 2008)

From the Inside Flap
Innovation leaders promote and address the innovation agenda in their company. Through personal conviction or competitive necessity they are obsessed with providing superior value to customers through innovation. They know how to mobilize their staff behind concrete innovation initiatives and do not hesitate to personally coach innovation teams.

Using real business experience and empirical research, Deschamps characterizes a specific and distinctive form of leadership that stimulates and sustains innovation.

This book will help you improve the innovation performance of your organization by:

  • identifying and recognizing your company's innovation leaders, both through their behaviour and priorities
  • encouraging spontaneous innovation initiatives, bottom-up, and steering innovation proactively, top-down
  • distinguishing between four different types of generic innovation strategies and understanding their different leadership imperatives
  • realizing that each innovation strategy requires a different style of leadership and different priorities
  • assessing and developing your innovation leadership environmental and resources.

From the Back Cover
"In his breakthrough work, Innovation Leaders, Jean-Philippe Deschamps provides brilliant insights and useful frameworks about the role of leadership in the innovation process. While others talk about innovation systems, Deschamps goes to the heart of the problem: the need for strong, engaged leaders to guide the innovation process. This book should be required reading for anyone who wants to build an innovative organization."
—Bill George, Professor of Management Practice, Henry B. Arthur Fellow of Ethics, at Harvard Business School and author of Authentic Leadership and True North

"This book is a landmark — a must to read for all who are concerned with Innovation – practitioners and academicians alike! Innovation is given a new, powerful meaning in this book – a senior management leadership task! The responsibility for Innovation is therefore clear – Deschamps has done a great job to take this complex issue into an impressive, minimalistic synthesis."
—Peter Lorange, IMD President, The Nestlé Professor – Strategy, DBA Harvard University

"Who says innovation can't be managed? True, few large organizations do it well, but that's often because they lack leaders with the skills Jean-Philippe Deschamps details in Innovation Leaders. If you want to become your company's next innovation leader, your time will be well spent studying what Deschamps has to say about the six critical abilities you'll need, and how to match them with the situation you find yourself in."
—Robert M. Tomasko, author of Rethinking the Corporation, Go for Growth and Bigger Isn't Always Better

"Jean-Philippe's insights in the areas of technology development and strategic approach to R&D are obvious and clearly visible in his writings. His ability to mix actual hands on experiences with direct interactions with the top technical executives of innovative companies make this book an asset to remember!"
—Mahmood Rad, Director Product Development Office, Harley Davidson

"This outstanding book provides deep understanding of a topic that has been little explored or understood up to this time. Jean-Philippe Deschamps' unique world of experience has blended close hands-on participation in the real time commercial environment where innovation and product development succeed or fail with the academic opportunity to experience, reflect, think, and learn. Jean-Philippe shares with his readers the sharp insights into success and failure that distinguish the 'reflective practitioner.'"
—Kemp Dwenger, Founder, Director, IAPD International Association for Product Development

Perspective on Innovation Leaders
By Daniel Wolf
Innovation capacity in any enterprise depends on specific leadership and management practices. These practices serve to stimulate, guide, engage and sustain innovation. Deschamps provides a deep and insightful analysis of innovation leadership as it applies to different environments and strategic constructs. This is an excellent framework for enterprise development.

Putting a face on everyday leadership practice is part of the author's lesson. Innovation leadership is generated from the executive ranks to the front line efforts of the organization. This balance of mindset, structure and culture shape the methods and processes of innovation, as well as the outcomes of innovation.

Deschamps sets forth a series of five process imperatives that are basic to leadership in different applications of innovation strategy:

1.Unbundle and Map the Innovation Process
2.Define and Disperse Process Management Roles
3.Assess, Evaluate and Improve Key Sub-Processes
4.Engage Cross-Functional Teams, Collaborate
5.Develop and Apply Process Indicators, Metrics

Process concerns are often where development and innovation programs go haywire. But the author connects leadership thought and behavior with strategy, process, resources, culture and structure to redefine a company's capacity for innovation. Process becomes a channel for innovation leadership.

Roughly a third of this book is dedicated to innovation models and leadership for different development imperatives. These encompass new/improved products or extensions, category innovation, business system innovation and customer experience innovation. These differences have been noted by other authors over the years, but Deschamps puts the leadership and management constructs in their proper place. That helps put the strategic agenda in focus.

This is serious reading, but it provides critical insights into the conversation on innovation strategy, leadership and structure. Further, it will explain to many corporate boards and extended organizations the practical differences between dancing with innovation and causing real innovation.

Finally a book about leaders who need not be superman
By Herman Vantrappen
I've been waiting impatiently for the publication of Deschamps' book as I had read his previous bestseller Product Juggernauts. I also had had the privilege of talking extensively with the author on innovation management 2 years ago for an interview that I published in Arthur D. Little's journal Prism. The author was still in the midst of shaping his thinking about "innovation leaders". What makes the book great is its pragmatic approach to innovation management and the realistic view on leadership. Many books on leadership position leaders as near-perfect heroes. This book acknowledges that "superman" does not exist. As a consequence, 99% of "normal" managers and executives will find this book highly accessible and relevant to their daily innovation management practice. At the same time, it is more than a concatenation of easy anecdotes and examples: it also provides structure and framework to a subject that by nature is hard to grasp yet so important.

Great set
By Zach Augustine
An excellent introduction to Plato's philosophy. If you're interested in the historical figure of Socrates, these dialogues are most are most concerned with his life.

Philosophically, these "Five Dialogues"--Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Meno, Phaedo--along with Phaedrus, Symposium and the Republic form the bulk of Plato's thought on Forms and the soul. This is a great place to start. The Euthyphro is a typical early dialogue and sets the stage for the charges that face later Socrates in the Apology. Both are very readable. Crito and Phaedo show Socrates in prison accepting his fate with poise and refusing to escape. They are also the most vivid explanation of the immortality of the soul. Meno is a middle dialogue that poses important problems of knowledge and learning resolved by the theory of Forms and Recollection. It's also the most difficult and rewarding of the bunch.

This Hackett edition is nice but not great. The dialogues are the Grube translation, edited by Cooper. The introduction by Grube is rather short and just explains the logic behind the grouping of the five dialogues, which is disappointing compared to other Hackett's. However, the translation is good, if a bit literal. There are explanatory footnotes for all of Socrates' idioms and historical references.

The margins and book design are nice and readable for such a compact book. The main advantage this little 8x5 paperback has is that it's cheap, easy to carry, and perfect for writing in. I feel the same way about the other excellent Hackett editions of "Symposium", "Phaedrus", and "Laches and Charmides". Now that my interest in Plato has solidified, I will likely invest in the Hardcover collection "Plato: Complete Works". However, you will miss out on the introductions found in the individual Hackett's, in particular Symposium's and Phaedrus which are fantastic.

By William C. Scruggs
While only five of the dialogues are included, I regard and urge everyone to read this remarkable little book. Of course the Platonic Dialogues constitute a fundamental foundation upon which all Western philosophy is constructed. To read Plato and Aristotle is to intellectual equip ones self with lens threw which critical reasoning can be pursued. I could read and reread the Apology every month and always find some new insight.

Considerably Profound yet Easy to Read
By TW
The philosophies of Socrates and Plato have transcended generations for thousands of years and are still considered the foundation of all modern philosophy. Although the authenticity of even the existence of Socrates is not entirely clear, the dialogs presented by Plato offer a powerful illustration of reason and wisdom presented in an easily read format.

Socrates has a remarkable wit and sense about his demeanor; admitting full ignorance yet displaying true wisdom in his manner of questioning. The first dialog with Euthyphro exemplifies the power of clarity and simplification by how quickly Socrates is able to identify contradictory statements in Euthyphro's reasoning merely by asking questions. It is immediately obvious how profound this dialog is shown by Socrates' ability to quickly discover either truth or ignorance, and his intention will give pause to any reader.

The Apology and the dialogs with Crito and Meno all further define Socrates' thoughts on life and character encircled around his trial, conviction, and eventual death; each dialog as profound as the next. The concluding dialog with Phaedo is a discussion of Socrates' views on the afterlife, which includes a powerful rationale for his beliefs. If you seek to explore ideas regarding life and death, this dialog is essential reading.

This book is short and easily read yet contains considerable thought provoking material. Among the abundance of books available on philosophy, the Five Dialogs should be among the first for anyone with an interest in the matter.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K-Even the closest friendship must weather the occasional storm. Such is the case with a preschool boy and girl who share in all kinds of creative play. Theirs is a relationship made in heaven until harsh words are spoken and they shout at one another. The boy describes his anger, feigned indifference, sadness, and loneliness all resulting from the spat. He muses that if his friend were as sad as he is "She would come and say, 'I'm sorry,' and I would say sorry, too." While the youngster's desire for reconciliation is admirable, these sentiments give a mixed message about apologizing. Additionally, the cause of the disagreement is not explained in either the pictures or the text. Since many young children are very concerned with issues of fairness, this omission may be troubling, even though the point is clearly not to assign blame to either child. Lovely illustrations represent the preschoolers and their familiar surroundings with a softened realism. Renderings of the children's faces are especially effective in conveying the emotions McBratney describes. Despite some modest quibbles with the story line, this gentle vignette nicely portrays a friendship between the genders.

From Booklist
The author of Guess How Much I Love You (1995) offers a simple, straightforward contemporary story about a falling-out between two best friends that hints at a resolution but cleverly leaves it up to young listeners to decide if they agree. Eachus' gauzy, dappled watercolors and 1940s-style English countryside settings convey an old-fashioned, cozy feeling to the story about a subject that might otherwise have been upsetting to youngsters. The young boy narrator tells of his friendship with a little girl--exploring the farm, teaching dolls to read, being doctors and fixing broken bones. Then there's a sudden argument ("I SHOUTED at my friend today, and she SHOUTED back at me"), and the children avoid each other. The friendship seems irreparable until the little boy imagines what his friend would do if she were as sad as he. Gentle and understated in both text and art, this has a great deal to teach about empathy and forgiveness. The rich paper quality allows for repeated reading. Connie Fletcher

Review
As with his hugely popular tale 'Guess How Much I Love You', Sam McBratney strikes just the right note here depicting the highs and lows of childhood friendships. Every parent will recognise that special relationship, so full of innocence and trust, and know just how it is when small arguments cause great anxiety. With gentle illustrations to match the text, this is a classic picture book. 'Time Out'

A great apology
By A Customer
I like this book because it is sweet and simple. It talksabout friendship and love and being hurt and saying "I'msorry". The illustrations are adorable. This is a great book to teach young children about apologizing and would also be a great gift to give as an apology to a friend, sister, brother, husband, or anyone who needs it. It would be hard not to accept such a sweet apology.

Good for conflict resolution between children
By George Swan
I'm Sorry, by Sam McBratney, focuses on all of the positive sides of a good friendship. The joys of a young boy is shared with his best friend. They play well together until one day they encounter a problem. Mr. McBratney does a great job of capturing how children feel after they have had a conflict and are no longer friends. At first I thought it was the boy who should apologize first, but then I realized that children always expect the other person to make the first move.
The book can be used for children K-3 to highlight the joys of good friendships and how to share with one another. Even though there they share many great times together, just one "mistake" can take it all away. It teaches children how to be careful of how they treat one another. When conflicts occur, they must be resolved or else both parties will pay the consequences - usually loneliness and sadness.
Jennifer Eachus has done a superb job of illustrating the story. In my opinion it's of Caldecott quality. Her artwork is soft and beautiful and captures detail through her "old-fashioned" touch. I chose the book in part for it's outstanding illustrations.

No one actually says "I'm sorry"!
By newtonscricket
This book is gorgeous. The illustrations will draw in child and adult alike. The emotions are portrayed honestly in a way children will easily identify.
But why, for the love of Pete, can't the book end with an actual apology and resolution instead of an imagined one? The narrator, a little boy, sulks to himself "If she were as sad as I am sad, here is what she would do", namely say she's sorry, even though apparently the little boy SHOUTED at his friend first.
I very nearly bought this book after skimming it at the bookstore, enchanted by the beautiful pictures. I thought my 4 year old could really use a model of an apology, but that's not what this book is. Thank goodnes I read it through carefully.
I gave it two stars to acknowledge the incredible artwork, but I wish it were in a different book.

Four Stars
By Kelley Hunt
I have never seen JVP's tv shows but the title of this book attracted me so I decided to read it. It is written in very basic language, and illustrated with many stories from JVP's experiences. It should be easy for anyone to understand. In the book he discusses how the spirits of people who have died will sometimes hang around the Earth instead of moving into the "Light". He gives reasons they sometimes have for staying around; unfinished business, not realizing or accepting that they are dead, fear of crossing over into 'Hell', being too firmly invested in the material world, etc. JVP also discusses the many dimensions of the universe which exist and how the spirits of people who do too much evil on Earth become trapped in lower dimensions (what we think of as "Hell"). The topic of reincarnation is briefly touched on as JVP tells us that spirits tend to reincarnate in "family" groups and therefore we are around the same spirits in human form, century after century during our lives on Earth. Beyond ghosts, JVP also discusses the power of human and spirit thought, and how thoughts help create our world and our reality. Meditation is discussed briefly. There is little discussion of the entity that we call "God" and I wish JVP had shared more of his thoughts or impressions on that subject. At the end JVP shares some techniques regarding getting in touch with the spirit world, and protecting oneself from the influences of negative energy from other humans and spirits. Although I don't believe any one person has all the answers about the workings of the universe, I thought this book for the most part was an interesting, informative read. I think if there is anyone out there struggling with belief that they should read this book and also some books on meditation. There is nothing in my experience like practicing meditation to make one realize that there really is something out there besides the short life we experience on this planet.

As soon as I knew about this book I bought it. I just knew it would be a fabulous read and I was not disappointed. I read it in one sitting. Just couldn't put it down. Thought about sending it to my Mom, but decided to keep it so I can read it again and again. I'll order my mother another one. I'm sure it will bring her comfort like it does me. It's very inspirational to live your life to the fullest and best that you can.

I had a reading by James shortly after my father's death and in that reading he told me that my father was telling me where my mother had been and that he had been with her. I called my mother and told her and she was unable to speak. She had just been to their favorite place in Sedona, AZ with all the fountains and to know dad was there with her brought her to tears she was so happy. James also told me things NO ONE on earth including me could possibly have known. I am still in contact with my father and others who have passed thanks to James validating what I thought was true. Love you James. Keep up your fantabulous work!!

Best book on this subject - has most answers
By Kerry D
This is the absolute best book about ghosts and what happens to us after we are dead. Here's some of the things that I learned from the book:

(1) When we die, our spirit comes out of our body and we retain all of our memories. In spirit-form, we are exactly the same person only without a body.

(2) We in spirit-form choose to either hover around and watch our funerals or go to the light. At death, everyone has either friends, deceased family members, or a spirit guide meet us.

(3) In spirit-form, you can think of a place and immediately be there. This includes another planet.

(4) In spirit-form, you can go to all of the same places you did before you died. For example, you can go to your church and sit in the pews. While your ghost is sitting in the pew, there may be a wedding going on in our reality, but you in spirit-form will only see the sermon from before you died.

(5) In spirit-form you will appear in what ever clothing you want, just from thought.

(6) Your dead relatives can pop in and out of your home, bathroom, work-place, etc whenever they want and see what you're doing.

(7) Dead people read minds. If you think of a dead relative, that dead relative will know it and may come to you if they want. Dead people can read minds so whatever you're thinking about them, they will know it. Example: if you want to know if your dead grandma is OK with you selling her house, you can ask her to give you a sign that it's OK by asking her out loud or just thinking the question. You may have to wait a couple of days but eventually you should see her "OK sign". The example in the book was a license plate that had the dead person's initials and ended in OK.

(8) Your dead relatives can try to contact you by making an object appear somewhere. Example, if your dead son was a rock collector when he was alive, then he could move a rock and place it in your bathroom under a towel. Obviously there wouldn't be a rock in your bathroom normally so when you pick up the towel and see the rock drop to the floor, you should realize that your dead son is telling you he's OK. The rock doesn't just float through your house, it would appear instantaneously.

These are samples of the good information in this book. I recommend it highly.

One more bit of info - Lucille Ball's spirit still visits the studio where she made the Lucille Ball TV show. In spirit-form she told James that she visits the studio because she was always very happy there doing what she loved.

From Formalism to Weak Form: The Architecture and Philosophy of Peter Eisenman (Ashgate Studies in Architecture), by Stefano Corbo

Peter Eisenman is one of the most controversial protagonists of the architectural scene, who is known as much for his theoretical essays as he is for his architecture. While much has been written about his built works and his philosophies, most books focus on one or the other aspect. By structuring this volume around the concept of form, Stefano Corbo links together Eisenman’s architecture with his theory. From Formalism to Weak Form: The Architecture and Philosophy of Peter Eisenman argues that form is the sphere of mediation between our body, our inner world and the exterior world and, as such, it enables connections to be made between philosophy and architecture. From the start of his career on, Eisenman has been deeply interested in the problem of form in architecture and has constantly challenged the classical concept of it. For him, form is not simply a cognitive tool that determines a physical structure, which discriminates all that is active from what is passive, what is inside from what is outside. He has always tried to connect his own work with the cultural manifestations of the time: firstly under the influence of Colin Rowe and his formalist studies; secondly, by re-interpreting Chomsky’s linguistic theories; in the 80’s, by collaborating with Derrida and his de-constructivist approach; more recently,by discovering Henri Bergson's idea of Time. These different moments underline different phases, different projects, different programmatic manifestos; and above all, an evolving notion of form. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach based on the intersections between architecture and philosophy, this book investigates all these definitions and, in doing so, provides new insights into and a deeper understanding of the complexity of Eisenman’s work.

Review
'Despite his significant impact on architecture through both built and theoretical works, most studies of Peter Eisenman's career focus on either one aspect or the other. In From Formalism to Weak Form: The Architecture and Philosophy of Peter Eisenman, Stefano Corbo attempts to redress this balance, connecting themes in the design and the theory of the influential architect across the many stages of his 50-year career.' arch daily
